Try P90X. You can do it at home and it works great.

how much does that cost?
[–]Rob_V 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
About $120. Of course you could find a torrent somewhere, but piracy is bad.

If you're going to a proper gym get one of the staff to help you out with a program. Technique is everything, not how much you can lift. If you have the wrong technique it doesn't matter how much you're lifting, you'll really just be wasting time and money. Just because one set of exercises works for someone else it doesn't mean it'll work for you.
Have a chat to the staff and rely on tips from professionals, not seddit.

Check out bodyrock.tv. They have a ton of free workouts you can do at home with a modicum of equipment. Also, they're HARD.
I find my biggest excuse for not working out is that it takes too long to go to the gym, so having something i can do at home is ideal.

You need like 3 or 4 exercises. A deadlift, a press, the pullup, and situps. Or forget the situps, you probably get a good enough ab workout from the deadlift. A good press is the overhead press, you can do it with a barbell or two dumbells. Squats are hard to do right, you could injure yourself.
Go for increased weight... you don't have DO the 1-rep-max every workout but you are working on increasing the amount of weight you can lift off the floor safely. 5 reps is good. Anything more than 8, get a heavier weight. Training to "failure" is a bad idea, it will cause injury. Just work on doing a workout that will build your confidence, as you mentioned, and muscles will follow.
