This particular topic is one that I'm currently somewhat passionate about, as nearly everyone in my family is pressuring me into marrying my longtime gf and buying her the most expensive rock I can afford. Clearly this is an intelligence test: the more a man spends on an engagement ring, the more easily coerced and therefore dumber he is. On the other hand, if I don't shell out the money, my gf will be taunted behind her back by other women (she's already getting shamed because Ive refused to marry for so long) and society will diminish my humanity because of the appearance of my unwillingness to serve my gf.

Women are obsessed with materialism and status signaling. It's just the pain hard truth. You're right: marriage today isn't about love or commitment or the sharing of life with someone you love. Maybe it used to be, but today it's just a blue pill fantasy because too many women (idk a single dude who cares about the size or worth of his wedding ring) use their wedding and marriage to basically socially dominate other women so they can feel better about themselves. From what I've seen, when a man is no longer helping her do that he's divorce raped smh.

You can explain to people the divorce stats (over half of all marriages today end in divorce, women initiate 80% of divorces, etc), you could have the best arguments as to why engagement rings and expensive weddings are a scam, but people just don't care and will dismiss you as a cheapskate who must not love her that much because "the ring represents your love for her". Society is brainwashed. Rant over.

The value of diamonds along with cigarette smoking were Hollywood constructs a few decades back.

Diamonds are expensive because they are controlled by a monopoly. If not controlled by a monopoly, they would have little value, except for as cutting tools (then again those don't need long ceremonial polishing).

Interesting enough that fake diamonds (man made and in existence ~one decade), are now considered unique and just as valuable as the real thing - go figure. Just as real as ice from the frig, so they proclaim.

Well, if the misses believes it, guess what, you are going to pay thousands or even millions for that piece of fake nature.

It is land, salt and gold/silver ( the latter to some degree) that have been considered valuable throughout humanity. To that list include horses as well, but not as practical for most nowadays.

The whole story of diamon engagement rings is crazy. Before the 1920s only like 15% of rings used for engagement were diamonds. But because the "de beers" needed to expand the market of who bought diamonds they had hollywood create a bunch of scenes of men proposing with diamond rings and thus you have what you do today.

With the amount of diamonds that have been mined in Africa and that are in vaults waiting to be sold. They'd be much less valuable. But they store them up and only release little by little

For those into the concept of marriage, I am not, society is going to have to come up with a foolproof way to justify the man in the event that he picks the lemon. Legally, it is almost impossible to have legal requirements on the woman -- especially if children are involved. Something along the lines a parental co-sign. The woman cannot be held liable, but since her parents signed, then the stiffed man gets the parent's house as compensation.
