Reading the comments on this article was interesting. One guy pointed out another factor the author missed, that these sassy, college educated women are walking around with up to $100,000 in student loan debt (or as he described it, “anti-dowries”). Add in the fact their degree was probably in some Social/Gender Studies major, so their potential income will not offset such a liability. So maybe math does have something to do with it, just not how the author implied.

I was reminded of this while reading Vanity Fair’s much-publicized piece, “Tinder and the Dating Apocalypse,” which naively blames today’s “hookup culture” on the popularity of a three-year-old dating app. I say “naively” because it’s not the first time some newfangled technology has been mistakenly blamed for young people having more sex.

At present, it’s Tinder. But the moralizers of Nemirovsky’s era fooled themselves into believing that the automobile was to blame for loosening sexual mores. “A house of prostitution on wheels” was how one judge described it at the time.

Today’s hookup culture does have one big thing in common with the ’20s flapper generation, and that is demographics. In the Vanity Fair article, David Buss, a University of Texas psychology professor, says that apps like Tinder contribute to “a perceived surplus of women,” among straight men, which in turn leads to more hookups and fewer traditional relationships. Here’s the thing: This surplus of women is not just “perceived” but very, very real.

So it's "math"... not cars or tinder. Oooh, and the numbers are REAL and not JUST "perceived.

And then the idiot author goes on to explain that it's the imbalance in COLLEGE graduation rates that makes it REAL, and not just "perceived."

I mean seriously... it truly is amazing just how oblivious some people can be. NNTaleb calls them "IYI's" (Intellectual Yet Idiot); and this dude is definitely one of them.

Consider that he closes the article with this inanity:

This isn't about "education."

This is about money.

You could be educated up the wazoo, but if that education can't snag a huge income, you're no better than the high school dropout.

To be honest I live in a major metro area and women have such high expectations I'm lucky to ever get a date online. Women would rather chase down a guy who has many options than settle for a guy like me and it shows.

Now my experience is primarily online where yes looks are about all that matters but still. I make good money, have my life reasonably well put together.

And I still have trouble. I'm leaps and bounds over my peers and still have trouble. Even if there is a supposed shortage of men available to these women they will still chase after someone whos really good looking.
