A big problem these days is that we have so many ways to avoid discomfort, so we tend to fear it, and try to quickly remove it from our lives. Feeling anxious or depressed? There's a medication for that. Feeling lonely? Go onto social media or dating app. Feeling hungry? There's fast food and processed snacks. Feeling you don't have enough time? There's a product that will free up more time.
Today people are conditioned to avoid pain and discomfort as soon as it hits and to rely on various societal goods and services to push these negative emotions away. It makes people weak and reduce discipline and resiliency.
Next time you feel discomfort, sit with it for a while. Befriend it. Observe how it moves through your body. Don't try to resist it or push it away. It will go when it is ready to go. When you can do this, you realize discomfort is temporary and you can live with it. You will be a stronger person because you embraced it.
