Specifically how this is broken down is:

Information is data, just packets of facts. Understanding is the connections between points of information. Knowledge is the whole picture. You have facts and you have (logical) understandings connecting them all together.

It's important to be able to understand it in this framework, because it allows tools to exist that can identify situations where links merge on an area where there is no data, allowing for a deduction. It's also helpful to understand when some information may be "close by" but unlinked.

And like all philosophy, there's thousands of years where people would try to kill you for saying it works this way. There're hundreds of philosophies that say all this is bogus and garbage (looking at you literally every religion). The history of philosophy is laughably limited and ignorant.
