There are a few questions here.

First, is a robot practical? Imagine a robot which is so energy efficient, it can last a month or more without recharging if necessary without dying, although more frequent charges are better. A robot which self-heals when damaged (minor damage). Where you can give it an ambiguous request like, "wash the dishes" and it fulfils the request intelligently and competently. This... is called a human.

In terms of energy, computers and mechanical actuators are insanely energy inefficient. Which is why computers and robots need a tether to the electrical grid.

Second, ethics and stuff. I'm of the belief that humans are not special - all animals have sentience and awareness, can solve problems, we're just better at it. I strongly believe respecting life is important. And just because we cobble together an AI from copper instead of carbon doesn't make it not-a-life.

Having said that, if we invent a life which absolutely loves doing X, whatever X is, maybe that's not a bad thing. But if it stops enjoying X, do we let it stop and go do something else? What happens if we don't need X done anymore? People are versatile and we grant them wide leniency to take care of themselves and decide their activities in life. Will we grant the AI the ability to change their role if they so decide? This is the difference between companion and slave.

Wrapping up: I think we can expect more robot helpers, like dishwashers and roombas, and this is good. I also expect to see AIs crop up in the cloud eventually, but they'll live inside computers - maybe using bodies like puppets, where they control them remotely. But if you take the intelligence thing far enough, you just end up back at human, so I don't think you've escaped any ethical issues there.

Segway: If you like science fiction, the "Culture" series by Iain M. Banks features super-advanced AIs who keep humans around as pets. I loved the series, highly recommend it.

The technological prerequisites are actually far more interesting IMO.

Cheap advance automation (as in AIs automating R&D and by extension everything less than that... which is basically everything except for gender studies) along with cheap energy production & storage would effectively usher in a post scarcity society one way or the other (either freebies for everyone or the rich kill off the rest, either way all remaining humans would end up in similar economic situation)

Probably bad. AI may be good in the sense that it is able to process information from its environment and people and help the product using the AI to improve its performance and maybe learn new functions.

But, remember: a significant population of people are either brainwashed or radicalized.

Also, don't forget about hackers. WTF are you going to do when mainland China is already a powerful country. The maintenance and security issues would be a pain in the ass. Would rather just rub one off.
