To require the name on the birth certificate? That's the first step in proving that this child is, indeed yours and that you have rights regarding the child's well-being.

Let's say you have a baby with a woman you've been living with for years (but you're not married). In Ireland, the mother can go have the baby and not put your name on the birth certificate. So, then let's say you have a giant fight with her and she gets mad and says she's moving away - maybe out of the country. Having your name on the birth certificate at least proves that you have SOME claim to the child. There, at least in Ireland, is still no "automatic rights" to the child just because a father's name is on the certificate. But it's a good first step. Next would be to associate other rights and responsibilities - so that if something does happen between you and your child's mother, you have a fair say in the child's life and it's not just an open-and-shut case for the mother to be allowed to move away and leave you out of the child's life legally.
