Bitter hostility and disinformation spread from vocal members within MRA are ruining your reputation
Source?
who stands to benefit if your pleas fall on deaf ears? On the same token, who stands to benefit if the pleas of mothers fall on deaf ears?
Because mothers are obviously more important than fathers.
Now I ask you…who has more power to undermine your rights? Feminists? Or the morbidly rich?
Feminists who actually undermine the MRM.
So long as we have each group separated according to gender, skin color, class and cause…none of us present any threat to the status quo.
The first wave of feminism was comprised almost exclusively of white women.
This is a serious problem for the advancement of all human rights. I implore the leaders amongst you to stand up and clip any sorts of behaviours which could lend more to this sentiment. No it’s not fair. Yes you should be able to bitch and whinge and say anything you want, even if it’s misinformed; you still deserve rights. Unfortunately this is not how social progress works. Anything you say can and will be used against you. To get your message across you must be excellent communicators and that is where I can see MRA is sorely lacking in leadership.
You realize this Reddit, right? Not exactly organized. I'm pretty sure you are looking at this subreddit and deducing that this is all there is. Go to GirlWritesWhat on Youtube. Type MRM conference into Google.
Why, if I am not able to be a master communicator, do I feel this is not a safe space for me?
We aren't the fucking KKK. Show concern for men's rights and you'll be well accepted.
Please understand I am within a small minority of people who will extend themselves this way.
This subreddit has 82,000 subscribers.
the only real rights I see for you is the right to man up, get back to work and fuck your hand at the end of the day.
Whoa there
You have the right to kill yourself if you don’t like it.
Not making great cases here.
No I don’t want the right to stand beside you and die in a puppets war.
You are having some major issues with Democracy. Terrorist.
No I don’t want the right to stack shelves 40 hours a week
Yes, you do want that right. You just don't want to have to do it. Not having the right would mean that it would be illegal for you to work even if you're unemployed.
a profiteering system that prefers to keep you as workers
Well... about that... you can't make money if you don't work. There is no way around that. Economies would crumble if you didn't work but got paid.
I will lovingly breast feed your child if you will bravely guard us from intruders.
Disposable male thing going on here. Even if you're a woman, you can still use a gun.
if only you will allow me that power.
You have this thing going on where you think we are some organized group of people. This is Reddit. Post things, get karma. That's how this works.

Are you serious? I don't even know how to begin unpacking the idea that feminists attacking MRAs have more power to damage men than the morbidly rich have to damage us all.
Both are guilty, however one is obviously far more guilty. Does this mean we should not fight both of them? If someone kicks you in the shin and the other kicks you in the crotch do you not fight both of them?
So how about you choose to influence a different tact and avoid creating an environment here that is only inclusive to financially capable (usually white) males. If half as many front page posts were dedicated to exposing the incarceration rates of black males, as they are dedicated to exposing feminists for being awful bitches; you might get some more credit.
One of these things if obvious and a huge problem which other people are working on, that being the incarceration rates of black males. The other is people who have actively fought against us. I do agree the pointing out the stupid things feminists do especially idiotic stuff like blog posts gets old, but reddit is a lowest common denominator phenomenon. I get more upvotes writing a witty one liner than I do writing a two page well thought out response to something.
You don't have to be the KKK to be unapproachable, please avoid thinking in such extremes. I am not calling you the KKK, but plenty here will call me a Nazi.
I think he is saying that he thinks the way you approached was kind of insulting, it is kind of a presumption of guilt thing. I guess one way of looking at it is do you cross the street when approaching a black person? Hell no that is pretty racist and presumptuous.
Well now I'm a terrorist because I don't want men or women to die at stupid wars. You're not making your case very well, nor does anyone who upvotes such vitriolic nonsense.
I honestly pray this is him trolling or using sarcasm. I think I recognize his name for trolling feminist posters before.

Your post is making most people on this subreddit misunderstand you.
[–]themountaingoat 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It strikes me that you don't know very much about the history of the MRM and don't have much experience talking about these issues in real life.
If you did you would realize that men's rights are not a taboo topic because of anything MRAs do, but because of feminist hostility to the idea of men having issues and because people innately don't care as much about men and are more threatened by them.
So your advice isn't really helpful at all. In fact every MRA group that has worried about not offending people or being nice has failed, as the demands of people and feminists just get more and more extreme until the movement isn't actually speaking to men at all, but only saying what feminists want to believe about men (ie that all men's issues are caused by other men shaming them).
[–]needs28hoursaday 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Interesting post, not 100% sure of its meaning however. While the words are pretty straight forward I do question if its adding much to the discussion of the MRA's. Obviously you feel passionately about rights for both genders (egalitarianism) but not sure if you are capturing the general message of what quite a few men seem to be striving for. Often what people are trying to achieve by being an active member is less about making big broad changes and instead bringing light to the issue so it can be discussed. Often with our gender it is considered "unmanly" to talk about things which work against you, and for me personally that is what MRA's bring to my life. While I am part of a gender which has good parts and bad parts in every society, its just nice to be able to talk about it.
I have supported my partner in all of her feminist rallies and protests, but have yet to hear a single word of support from a friend or family member. Just an hour ago I was told to "man up" when asking for gloves when taking out torn bushes. Its this environment that men live in daily which makes a place like the MRA forums so nice. Its a place where we can talk about our problems and issues without being told to just deal with it because of our gender. I will never complain about having to work hard or sacrifice for those that I love, but having it assumed due to my gender makes it a problem. Its rarely about manning up and more often about doing what you have to, something both genders can relate too.
I support you being an MRA advocate no matter what your gender or sexual orientation, but for me its not a fight, its a sanctuary. Many here might feel the same which is why down votes might happen, just keep fighting your fight and do what you believe is right. As long as you teach your boys that their gender doesn't give them a free pass or obligation I think they will be OK in the long run.
[–]needs28hoursaday 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
My pleasure, part of being a MRA is that you have opposing opinions to those that you hold. I encourage you to stick around and put forward your opinion as it helps build discussion among those of us that want it. Those that just down vote without reason are no better then those that dismiss our cause without hearing it out.
I went and got my own gloves in the end because doing things for yourself is a big part of moving forward. Doesn't matter if your a big old power lifter like myself or a tiny little gymnast like my girlfriend, some times the only way to move forward is by walking there yourself.
Hope the vocal minority never drives you away from something which you care about, as you obviously so much do. Hope to see you around here again at some point.
*quick edit: It's not a place for men, but a place for those who have an opinion on mens rights in society. That includes all people as long as they are respectful of the space and each others opinion. Golden rule and all that jazz.

Actually, in the UK, 72% of income tax is paid by men, only 28% by women. It's similar in the US.
Despite this, the largest portion of government social services is spent on women.
So I don't think it's really the rich that are screwing us over. It's the government, run by its matriarchal overlords.

Alright. It's a long post, and it starts off sounding very like the why can't we all get along posts that are frequently made here. I don't blame people for not giving it too close a reading. It turns out not to be entirely concern-trolling. I agree to a certain extent with your views on message discipline. I agree less with your vision of being ruled by tribal elders.
The main problem I perceive with your approach is that you're coming across as an attention seeker. Your title is about you. You announce that you expect to be treated like a damsel:
I ask you to show leadership and to defend me against the bullies amongst you who will surely come out of the woodwork to disrupt the productivity of our dialogue,

Firstly this is likely something you would be better off doing 1 on 1 with a MRA instead of trying to debate all this in public. You go over a lot and it is hard to keep track of what is what. Keep in mind we have people and bots who will go through and downvote all of our stuff. Do you think we would just downvote in less time than it takes to read the first paragraph?
One of the problems is your writing is high quality but feels kind of disjointed so it is kind of hard to understand, and long for a message board post. I will attempt my best to respond though. Forewarning it will take two posts to do so due to length.
Quite simply, you may be having the opposite effect you desire, and it is even possible that certain elements within MRA are wittingly and/or blindly working on this behalf, to undermine your cause.
I mostly agree with you and find their methods to be more harmful than helpful, but most of them are performing these actions for a reason. They feel like they have been silenced and or have spent up to the past 30 years trying to speak softly and convince others of their ideas, only to be insulted belittled and told "oh when we get around to it" or "sorry about your man feelz." Their response has been to eventually get fed up and perform the equivalent of grabbing the people who keep saying this by the shoulders to make sure they pay attention and shouting in their face to try and be heard while using coarse language. They feel the only voice they have is anger and unfortunately so far it has actually gotten the most results. The MRA phenomenon is hardly new and originally existed as an offshoot of feminism... only it was shut down by the same people it was an offshoot from and was told follow our rhetoric to the letter or else. Oh and only pay attention to our issues, if you don't you are a misogynist. For a long time they tended to go along with it, but the current generation refuses to do so. An example of this is the difference between Malcolm X and MLK, both wanted similar things but disagreed with the methods to do so. However they both realized sitting and preaching to the choir does nothing, you have to go agitate. King had to go on marches and sit down in white only diners to piss off the bigots, otherwise nothing would have changed. A lot of the people in the movement are more like King (myself included) But we both know it takes action that sometimes pisses people off to accomplish things. As I have described it before originally it was the two sexes living in side by side houses, one whose house was in a poor state of repairs, the others of which had some issues but not as bad. The feminists say my house is in a poor state of repairs, we should fix it! The man nods in agreement and they work together on her house to fix it. Currently the house has some issues but they are minor, the door sometimes sticks and the toilet sometimes runs. Unfortunately while the house was being repaired the mans house got into worse shape and started to fall apart because they were busy working on her house together. He tells the feminists okay we have the major issues handled, lets go fix up my house. Her response? Nuh uh! We have to finish everything in my house. His response is to tell her to go fuck herself and go back to repairing his own house. Now due to his rudeness and because she thinks if his house is repaired it will make hers worse a few of her fellow feminists light his house on fire (metaphor for feminist organizations working against us.) Ideally we would do away with living in separate houses and just live together.... but that is a long ways away.
As a woman, I honestly feel I would benefit should I and my sons have more rights. Yet more rights are not feasible in a system where both men and women are considered as nothing more than utilities and workers whose very existence has been designed for producing profits on behalf of the morbidly rich.
[–]Aaod 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Second post. Neither men nor women will win human rights for ourselves while we stand pitted against each other. Anyone heard of the strategy; Divide and conquer? So long as we have each group separated according to gender, skin color, class and cause…none of us present any threat to the status quo. Business goes on as usual. Completely agreed on this point, I am a socialist and I find our current system morally bankrupt and disgusting. I also agree with you that we should not be fighting and instead work on goals like ending our current system, but that does not mean I cannot spend some time working on other things as well. In this case fighting for mens rights, or as it happens fairly often fighting feminists who speak out against me and my rights. Unfortunately I am not someone who will take their work sitting down and will not allow this part of what I believe in to be decimated just to win another major battle. A smart general knows when to sacrifice a section of troops to win the war, however this is not one of those times. I will not let myself be divided, but I must respond when attacked. As a personal note you should see the insults I get from the socialist feminists when I try and speak my mind amongst other socialists. To me the two fights should remain separate, they are not peanut butter and jelly.
I honestly believe we are being willfully manipulated and encouraged to squabble amongst ourselves, while every day more and more human rights are taken away from us. If pitting ourselves against each other is our own strategy to gain personal rights, then we are all failing miserably.
A good example of this is our loss of rights for things such as privacy the government has been taking away, which neither side has said a damn thing about.
We try and police our own, but it is rather hard and we try not to practice censorship. Feminists have had the same issue from the very beginning. Look at the radical separatists of the 60's and 70's amongst the feminist movement. We ask the same thing of the feminist movement especially in the feminist organizations, which unfortunately have become too big to control by the movement and just became a money related things. Feminism started to fight the system and now has become part of the system, look at their lobbying efforts for example. I am just asking you to keep an open mind and see both sides are going to have their crazies who keep trying to poison the well, neither side is innocent of such a thing. To be honest the leadership thing is somewhat true, but that is simply because most leaders from the past have either given up, died, or committed suicide. The biggest ones left that are still around tend to be the fire and brimstone type unfortunately. There are new crops of leaders popping up, but this is a wildly unpopular movement in the mainstream. If I identified myself as a MRA at work or school I would be at best laughed at, no one wants to take a leadership position of such a thing and become a target.
I ask members of MRA to invite and welcome that leadership, and be open to dialogues with ‘other’ demographics. It is with intimidation I come to you today, as I only expect to reach a minority of MRAs and am prepared for scathing abuse from the zealots amongst you...unless by some miracle I am able to communicate with perfect precision. This, again, is a serious problem. Why, if I am not able to be a master communicator, do I feel this is not a safe space for me? All I want is human rights. For you, for me, for everyone. I have no other passion in life, but the cause of our own liberty.
I would like to point out the fact in the femradebates subreddit there are far more MRA members that are willing to debate and learn about the other movement than feminist members, despite them having to change the rules to fit feminist preference. Ask yourself how we respond and then try and look at how feminists respond in their subreddits to criticism or posting of MRA related stuff. We at least are willing to listen, them? Ban and post deletion.
I have observed that many of the infringements on the rights of women, by men, can be traced back to ways in which our society abuses the dignity and development of men themselves, and vice versa. While we stand against each other we have nothing to gain.
I am honestly curious on this one, would you mind going into it more?
I believe one of the most caustic sentiments in the West is that men have all the rights, and that Western women also have nothing to complain about, having moved beyond equality to special rights. Nothing could be further from the truth. These ideas sound very much like a complimentary mantra to ‘quit your bitching and get back to work.” Would you mind going into what rights women have left to gain? I can only think of a few smaller areas women still have issues. The special rights thing I am sure someone will go into more details on, one of the major disagreements amongst our two movements is feminists belief in equal outcome and our belief in equal opportunity. It isn't so much quit your bitching and get to work as it is to reference my previous anecdote of OH GOD MY HOUSE IS ON FIRE QUIT ASKING ME TO HELP FIX YOUR TOILET! If equality is interpreted to mean that we all have the right to be equally screwed by the systems we operate within, then I don’t want equality. No I don’t want the right to stand beside you and die in a puppets war. I want the right to bring the boys back home. No I don’t want the right to stack shelves 40 hours a week while my children languish unattended in unaffordable child care. I want the right to be a mother, I want to bring our men back to the hearth, and I want these men to be highly valued. It is not feminists who have displaced you, but a profiteering system that prefers to keep you as workers, and yes feminism has been manipulated to further this aim. I don’t relish my rights to share a symbolic vote between this puppet or that. I want decentralized leadership and local elders of all genders within my communities. I don’t want the right to pay bankers through the nose for the right to survival. I want the right to survival god dammit.

You will hear no disagreement from me or most of the movement on this one.
I don’t want to be the same as you. I will happily, bake you a pie if you will kindly chop the wood and stoke the fire. I will lovingly breast feed your child if you will bravely guard us from intruders. I will stand and fight beside you against intruders, for together we are stronger. United we stand, divided we fall.
Sounds good, keep in mind this is what some people would consider patriarchy. Ideally we should work together as a team, but to a lot of us it feels like one side no longer has to perform their duty and they are still stuck doing theirs which leads to anger. Whether this belief is true or not is widely open for debate though.
I ask you to show leadership and to defend me against the bullies amongst you who will surely come out of the woodwork to disrupt the productivity of our dialogue, under the pretence of fighting Nazis. Considering your willingness to question things or point out the flaws you see in a a system no matter which side the system is on a nazi analogy is highly inaccurate.

If there's one type of activist I can't stand more than a divisive, vitriolic MRA, it's the equivalent in feminists. Nobody has ever devalued me with more open misogyny than young extreme pseudo-feminists. I'm one of those breeders and I think men have fuck all rights; which make me the enemy. I am able to look beyond the extremists to the heart of the movements, but still it's really hard for us to talk openly under these bitter conditions.
I thought you were one of those divisive pricks, but then I scrolled through your comment history and there you were arguing against torturing and killing 40% of the population and I realized that we're fighting the same fight. Which is what brought me here to begin with.
The ego centrism is a bit of an ad hominem attack which does nothing to address my content.

Bub, that's where you're wrong. I strongly believe that if men where taken better care of by our society that would have immense knock on benefits for women, and vice versa.
On top of this I care more for the future of our sons than my own. I'll die and they're going to inherit this mess. I care equally for our daughters.
Everything is at stake.

Thanks but I feel like an idiot for spending my work day thinking about mens rights and how we can make it work. I'll just go off and cry like a little bitch now. I'm really not that tough, no matter how hard I try to be equal and "man up".
I don't cry because I'm attached to being liked, I'm attached to the idea that we can advance towards human rights, and I didn't make the tiniest difference to that today, despite passionately believing I could. I just lost a little bit of faith today. Again, I know that's self indulgently stupid, but hey, like I said, I'm stupid.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I know that feeling, trust me. If you give it time, you will find quite a lot of people on here are reasonable, but there's a loud minority of assholes everywhere on the internet. And a lot of people here are really, really frustrated with the blatant rejection of any attempt to give men rights and understandably come off as angry.
I recommend /r/FeMRADebates. It's a place for feminists and MRA's to come together and discuss gender issues and you'll probably get a better reaction there.
