In the US, male doctors do not dare to examine female patients without a female staff member present.

The risk of false accusations is just too high.

Chaperons are used, for the most part. in pelvic/ breast exams when the doctor is male and the patient is a female. It is rarely used at all when the patient is a man. This is done, in all honesty, to protect the doctor. It is risk-management. Many of my friends are MDs.

If they are bringing in women to watch the procedure as a risk management thing, doesn't this pretty much put the lie to the statement that women don't lie about rape?

I dunno man. Today it may be discrimination, but you can bet if I was a doctor examining a female patient, I'd want my ass covered from litigation and if a chaperon is needed for that, so be it. Hell if I was a teacher, I'd want all 1 on 1 meetings with female students recorded just to cover my ass.

In the UK any patient is allowed to take a chaperone if they want. If a doctor or any medical staff requests a witness to an intimate procedure that person, the witness, must be the same gender as the patient.

Every time I've seen a doctor it's been only me and him. No big deal.

I have a DDS friend who, if he's working on a female patient, always has someone else in the office, and always keeps the door open. It's not the "law", but you want a witness if the patient accuses you of something. Oddly I think America is returning to the 1800's as far as sex is concerned: chaperones to make sure the doc isn't up to something funny is one thing. Chivalry is another. I feel many false accusations in college and amongst young people aren't because the man assaulted the girl, but because the man was disrespectful to her afterwards. Fury is the emotion, accusation is the revenge.

In the UK you can request medical staff of the same gender if you feel embarrassed whether you are male or female.
