Why do we allow downvotes?

Because this isn't a safe space and we should allow dissenting opinion to be reacted with. If we're brigaded then ban the brigaders. If it's costantly from the same sub, then complain to the admins. I think that the downvote button is useful (also I wouldn't consider the_donald to be a good role model for how to run a sub)

Here's one very good reason NOT to eliminate downvotes:

We sometimes get feminist trolls making very shitty posts here under throwaway accounts, just so they can point to them and say, "Look! See how awful MRAs are?"

Those posts currently get downvoted to oblivion, which destroys their argument. But without downvotes there'd be nothing to show that we disagree with their bullshit posts and some of the mud would stick.

I think that would be a good idea too, I don't approve of reddits censorship downvoting, no matter how much I disagree with a person and yes, like you say, it prevents brigading.

Downvotes are a useful control on trolling and other rubbish that does not have to be banned.
