Maturity of Holdo? You mean the person who could have prevented all the deaths with a simple act of letting a trusted captain in the rebellion know her plan but instead chose nana nana nana I'm not telling and set the events in motion?

Okay, so this comment will contain spoilers. I'm not going to go into the emotional nonsense in this article, im just going to comment on the strategic and tactical blunders committed by the mature military leaders.

The evacuation. When your base is compromised by a force that can turn a continent into slag you don't form a convoy to leave all at once. You get the hell out of dodge, arrange a rendezvous elsewhere, putting all your eggs in one basket is asking for death.

The evacuation II. When fleeing for your lives stopping to load munitions or equipment is bonkers. Burn it in place and get out.

The evacuation III. Poe followed through on the attack run despite orders. A single message you the bombers could easily have stopped the whole thing. Either comms were incompetent or command really wasn't that committed to stopping the attack. Dressing down a subordinate for disobeying orders is right and proper, but doing it on the bridge is the kind of thing the Empire does. It undermines trust. Besides which killing the dreadnaught saved their collective lives, if it had followed them through hyperspace they'd have died in 3 volleys. Something neither admiral acknowledges.

Attrition. Leia has a poignant scene where she looks at the list of dead pilots. It's very sad that they died and as their commander it's ultimately her responsibility. But from a purely military perspective three bombers and a handful of fighters for a capital ship is a brilliant exchange, pawn takes queen.

The command structure I. Multiple admirals on the seemingly unshielded bridge? That's how martyrs are made. A tie pilot was able to briefly be a hero of the new order, I've rarely seen a more thorough decapitating strike.

The command structure II. The leadership swiftly developed an atmosphere of distrust. Keeping a battleplan from your own officers is just begging for a mutiny (oh look what happened), if the entire ship thinks command has no plan other than prolong death they're going to pursue their own options. A crew that had faith in their command would be more likely to bring solutions forward.

The escape ploy. Really? Cloaked transports? Only a moron would fall for such a ploy, though the first order lived up to that expectation admirably.

The final sacrifice of vice admiral. By this point the rebels have demonstrated they're perfectly happy to sacrifice as many ships as it takes. Why not burn one sooner? Rats on the end of a string shouldn't wait until the cat is eating them to go for the desperate maneuver.

The bolt hole: oh come on! You're going for a hole in the ground with no back door? I'm not actually mad at them for this, any port in a storm. I'm mad at the original rebels who built a heavily armored base with no escape hatch. All the first order had to do was set a blockade, establish a jammer and let the rebels quietly fade away in their hole. That kylo is an idiot and his general a moron is a gift from the gods at this point.

Poe's attack on the siege cannon, our hotshot fighter jock is no less guilty than the mature commanders in this debacle. Close formation frontal assault on what are essentially mobile fortresses with artillery. Brilliant, it ranks up there with a daylight charge across a minefield for tactics. He set out with a dozen speeders, by my count he lost 9 of them with 5 pilots making it back. 75% losses while achieving nothing. At that point only a movie protagonist can keep any sort of rank.

Some good points. Rose did a fantastic job guarding the escape pods, that she was alone is remarkably short sighted but she did her job. The Falcon, a famous ship like that has a rep, chewie and Rey took advantage of that with great success.

Leia was right, a commander shouldn't be concerned about being the hero, a rebellion needs heroes, martyrs too, but the commander can't just jump in an x-wing.

The dreadnaught captain, who immediately realized poe was clearing his defensive cannons and stated that fighters should had scrambled 5 minutes ago. Sound tactical sense, good thing he died, officers like him would roll up the rebellion swiftly.

Finally Skywalker's last stand. This was the highlight of the movie for me, at least from a military perspective. Rebellions live or die based on the view of the populace. In terms of propaganda Skywalker delivered a masterpiece. An artillery barrage washed over him like water, he humiliated the enemy commander in front of thousands of his troops, troops who will carry the story of the seemingly invincible jedi master who can vanish like smoke throughout the military. And clearly someone was broadcasting, when children lightyears away are telling the story. Yoda actually provided the image I'll use to describe it. While everyone else was trying to keep a failing spark alive Luke delivered a thunderbolt to set the galaxy ablaze. And leaving an image of his father's dice for Ben to find is twisting a dagger.

I loved the movie personally, I wasn't thrilled with the treatment of Luke but his struggle with failures and the guidance of Yoda went a long way to redeeming it in my eyes.

That went way longer than I expected it to.

Military officers are supposed to display Command, Leadership, and Management, each aspect alone does not make a leader, one must display all three. Yes, Poe Dameron had shortfalls, but this is not toxic, and to insinuate the female characters (Holdo in particular) showed more integrity is laughable and incorrect. a good example is any real life ship - communication is key and low morale ~~can~~ will kill effectiveness. "I'm not telling you" just does not work from a CO to and subordinate officer

Everyone in the movie is "guilty" of poor judgment and suffers failure in some way, which is a good thing for a story. It just isn't a case that male characters are bad and female characters are good
