The article is thoughtful and well-written, but halfway-through, the author feels compelled to make an obsequious apology for even considering men's issues.

I was hesitant to write this article, mainly because in no way do I want to be perceived as diminishing the talents of many, many brilliant women in publishing, nor do I believe that there is a true 'gender bias'. A bias insinuates some sort of malice, a purposeful exclusion of a segment of society for selfish reasons. Those kind of insinuations are not the aim of this piece, nor are they my opinions in any way. This is a critique of the system, not those who work within it.

Actually, I don't see this as a problem. There are tons of books, mostly the ones written by women or about women, that are marketed as being for women. Most books aren't specifically targeted, think about the books by men and primarily featuring men; the Dan Brown books for instance. They aren't "men's books" but thrillers or crime novels.

I think it is a problem that publishers push authors into niches,from books written by women put in pink and other brightly colored covers, no matter how serious the book is, to storylines being forced into something more marketable.

If it makes you feel any better, a lot of the "literature" marketed to women is pure drivel.

Unfortunately, it doesn't make me feel better at all :(
