Feminism's primary goal is always protecting women from the consequences of their actions. So they won't support laws like this unless they're written in a gendered way that specifies only men can be considered perpetrators.

Note all the hysteria about, "a woman might be wrongly identified as the perpetrator" under the new law.

Meanwhile, a male victim of DV who calls the police for help has a greater chance of being arrested himself (33%) than of seeing his female abuser arrested (25%). Not a single word from feminists on that very common injustice that happens every single day.

I can see a better potential for people in my former situation to have their abusers face some real consequences.

Strike that, the law still only applies to "intimate partners". And I have to wonder why.

The new offence of coercive control will only apply to a person who uses abusive behaviour
repeatedly or continuously against a current or former intimate partner. This means a person who is or was in an intimate relationship with the other person. The offence will not apply to siblings, parents, children, other relatives or friends.

Coercive control is a much too complex environment to create quick legislation without it having unintended consequences. That's what happens when you implement something based on knee-jerk emotion and not reason.

Also, what is with making it a criminal offense as the only method of dealing with the issue, especially when it will be so difficult to prove, whilst lowering the barrier to proof will just criminalise innocent people, especially if the justice system accepts allegations as proof? That is suggesting waiting until after the horse has bolted before smashing the gate, as an effective solution, when it just leads to a broken gate and a lost horse.

Perhaps society should focus on providing an easier escape for people alleging coercive control, like a sort of witness protection organisation tasked with making arrangements for people to start a new life instead of expecting them to navigate how to do it themselves whilst traumatised. Also educating people to take options to escape and be more resistant to "I can't leave because they are all I know and the only one who will love me". Leave criminality out of it, because there will be a tendency to use it to punish people. Punishment as deterrent only works if the perpetrator uses reason: in emotional situations, which is what these are, reason over punishment is the last thing on anyone's mind.

A UBI for every adult might be a good start in the right direction of providing independence too, at least enough to provide the essentials of life in a modern society.

Whilst I know many women refuse to accept it, women are in an ideal situation to use coercive control over men, because they literally hold men's sexuality hostage to their own emotional state: if they are upset with a man for not doing what they want, they will not offer sex, so sex becomes the form of coercive control to get what they want. They may not even be consciously aware they are doing it, but it means they are coercing men to do something they don't want to do by implicitly threatening to withdraw sex. Sex is important to men: if a man is told that he will not receive sex in a relationship, why would he want a relationship, but its because the situation of women being able to use coercive control is not accepted for the reality it is that men are going into relationships with false expectations. Men can't simply walk away from relationships without being penalised in many countries, which is itself a form of coercive control by the State to remain in a coercive control environment in the relationship.

If coercive control is not to become gender biased, then these situations must also be addressed.

coercive control laws should be part of DV laws( eg one of the 5 categories)

they are against it because .. have a guess which group practices coercive control overwhelmingly

"Coercive control" is yet another example of our modern fondness for speaking buzzwords and jargon rather than plain language. All of us, no matter where we sit on the political spectrum, could benefit exponentially from devoting a few minutes out of each day to sharpening our ability to speak and write in lucid, succinct sentences
