Parenting question - swearing

Not a parent- but I was a teacher for 3-6 year olds and studied early childhood education if you’re open to my non- parenting opinion.

I think him making up baby gibberish swears IS him gracefully expressing himself. I think hearing a 5 year old slam his finger in the door and say “Ah, puppy ears!” to express the general feeling of “Ah shit, that was awful!” is not only healthy, but shows emotional intelligence for himself.

I personally wouldn’t share “real” swears with him- not just from my personal bias that kids swearing isn’t funny (I don’t know how this trend became a thing!) but honestly he’ll pick them up eventually and it’s a nightmare when they do.

The only advice I would bestow is that when you DO hear him use these fake swears, maybe talk through the process so he can identify what made him mad, why he’s reacting this way, and how he can make himself better. “It really hurt when you stubbed your toe, huh? I can tell when you said gibberesh word that you weren’t happy, would you like to get a bandaid and some ice to help you feel better?” Or whatever.

As an aside- this sounds so funny I don’t know how you keep a straight face haha

My kids know all the swear words and rarely if ever use them. And when they do, it is almost always appropriate. I didn't teach them directly, they picked it all up from my every day speech. There was a brief period for about a week or two where my younger one's speech was getting him into trouble at school. All I did was sit him down and talk to him about it. The conversation went something along the lines of:

"I hear you've been swearing in class. Dude, it doesn't bother me when you swear, everybody swears. But there's a time and a place for it, and if you make poor choices about where you swear, you can get into trouble. Know what I mean?"

"Yeah, I got in trouble at school."

"Just don't swear in places where it's not allowed, or in front of your mom because she hates that stuff. Keep it cool alright?"

"Okay Dad."

Never had a problem since.

Point is, it's something they're going to learn one way or another. Might as well guide them if and when it starts. He was 6 when we had this conversation.

That poor child can't be understood. Teach him the F word so people will know what he means!

Kidding aside, Mr. Rogers is probably the best source for advice on this one.
