Everything here was supposed to disappear. Banned subreddits, deleted communities, cancelled blogs — much of what is archived here survives nowhere else.

It stays free — no paywall, no account — for the next man who comes looking, the way it was free for you.

Said below in another post -

Anything that involves telling children (especially boys) to sit down, hold still and shut up is doomed to failure.

Why else do you think that public education in the USA is cratering?

As a teacher, this gets me. The article makes a lot of valid points regarding socialization, but when the argument comes down to the ills of sitting down, shutting up, and learning, in essence traditional education, it gets ridiculous. How else do we give each student, regardless of sex, the opportunity to become a doctor, or lawyer? We all preach STEM, but guess what? The fundamentals of STEM take a lot of sitting still and traditional learning. Yes, lower level education is learning procedure over content, but if students don't learn how to learn at an early age, what can you build off of?

For me it's the fact that when they do act out they are harshly marginalized. There is not empathy for the troubles of boys in that environment, I really feel there needs a bit more paternalism about boys behavior instead of saying it's a pathology.

The problem with pathologization is that it prolongs the alienation of the student.

If a boy fucks around in class and gets a series of increasingly frantic "Now Johnny..."'s, is eventually sent to the principal, eventually suspended...then he is a)not in class b)never sent a clear message that this behavior is unacceptable. His life is hardly falling apart because he doesn't know the chief export of Zaire. Furthermore, since the problem is not "solved" in the mind of the teacher, it leaves the student-teacher relationship permanently strained.

Compare to, after a threshold, "Up against the wall, five swats of my belt" or whatever. While this is certainly more cruel in the short term, it a)keeps the student in class b)makes the child much more likely to submit, allowing the student-teacher relationship to once again move forward.

Obviously problems with it. Obviously problems with the current system. It is a mistake to automatically assume that what we have is better than what we had.

“The problem doesn’t simply involve men trying to overcome the demise of a local factory or teenage boys getting into trouble. It involves children so young that most haven’t even learned the word “gender.” Yet their gender is already starting to cast a long shadow over their lives.”

Just so. But it is not their own gender casting the shadow.
