I've been reading about evolutionary psychology. This is my theory.

If one guy jabs at another guy and he jabs back, they both affirm their high social status and leave each other alone.

If someone jabs at another guy and he does nothing back or takes it personally, the insulter looks superior and the insultee loses status. He will often then become the frequent butt of jokes for people to elevate their status, while his diminishes.
