upsides of the 9-5.
Set work hours (within reason)
Set salary
Some job security
Known level of responsibility and what you need to do to be promoted
Some form of worker protection (depending on country)
Paid Holidays (dependant on country)

Downsides of the 9-5
Set Salary
very hard to be come independently wealthy
can't enact your own vision for a company
May have to be political
May have to do things you don't agree with (part of being an adult)

I think it's unbearable to work 8h/day every Monday-Friday. I prefer working ~120h per month. For me 1800-2000EUR per month is more than enough. What's the point of having money if you don't have time to enjoy life?

I can’t say from experience cuz I only worked retail and am in university right now too but generally I think people hate the mundanity and what not but I think working that 9-5 shouldn’t be the end all be all to a happy life since that kind of schedule is exhausting but also allows for consistent hobby or family time. I would utilize the spare time I have to build up secondary skills or entrepreneurial things to make it so that I can rely on them for financial freedom in the future while the 9-5 is simply what will take me to that point or sustain me until I can achieve that.

Depends on the individual in question. For me, I work much better if I come to the office early and focus on my work all day. I prefer 9 to 5 for that reason. I've worked freelance and couldn't bring myself to work consistently, always got distracted.

For others, working 9-5 may be a nightmare if they prefer having more freedom and able to focus without distractions.

Goodness, if I were a hiring manager I wouldn't even bother interviewing you.

When you have ambition you read. You read a lot. IT is one, if not, the best field you can get in at the moment. All the branches are playing well and you get lots of liberty. Frontend, backend, DevOps, Networking, Pre-Sales, Technical roles whatever you get the idea. Even in Europe compared to other STEM jobs you still way higher. If you take the ratio work/studies/salary, IT is on top, easily beating anything out there.

I will briefly tell you why. If you are in the US the salaries or even outside the US, salaries can be crazy. If you work well you can get easily 250/300k a year after 4Yoe and not even in FAANG.

Secondly it's the most remote-friendly field. I think without any exceptions all my colleagues and friends are either partially remote (one or two days a week) or fully remote. You can wake up at 6AM if you like or 10AM. No one cares. What is important is that you show you are working (easy with git huh).

There are some exceptions. Google and Facebook, for example, don't allow any kind of remote. But again do your research most of the companies offer this now.

Also if you don't really need money, stop bartending. It's a pure waste of time. Use this time to prepare your coding interviews. Lots of newbies get 140/150k TC as a first offer thanks to this.

Edit: I read the other comments. I will strongly advise to not follow them. Work-life balance can be excellent. Just look for some remote in your job and you are done. Surround yourself with successful people.

Problem is that you know you're constantly making someone else, who barely works, a lot richer than yourself. I wouldn't mind 9-5 if I knew I would get 100% of my effort in return, instead of 1%.
