Yes, it gets easier. With experience, you start to see the different ways an interaction usually goes. When you know what might be coming, it isn't so scary.

Dude I loved your approach. Especially if it was as awkward as you say. You're badass for doing that, fair play. I passed a girl today I should have said hello to and I chickened out or found some last minute reason in my head not to. Your story gives me inspiration. It's a reminder.

I ask because I was pretty useless, I didn't have anything witty to say, or come across as super smooth, my heart was racing too fast, its ridiculous how difficult this is for me... But hey! I gave out my number... :p

Firstly you're not meant to give out your number, you're meant to get theirs. Giving out your number and waiting for girls to call is not a winning tactic.

Secondly you don't have to say anything witty, you don't have to come across as super smooth. Thinking that you do is probably one of the reasons you're having a hard time. You're allowed to be nervous, you're allowed to let her see that, she'll probably find it endearing and try to put you at ease. Authenticity is far more powerful than any shitty 'smooth' act you care to put on, because when there's an incongruence between your emotional state and your outward actions, people can tell that you're putting on an act and you end up doing worse than if you'd just been honest. The nervousness may never go away, you might just get nervous when talking to pretty girls. It might be best to accept that rather than fight against it, since fighting it can make it worse.

Generally though if you're going to talk to a group of girls you should probably have one in mind that you actually want to approach. Have a clear intent behind your actions. I imagine that you went up to those girls not to try to go out with one of them, but to simply practice approaching pretty girls, which is why it was awkward when they questioned your intentions by asking if you wanted to take both of them out.
