I've been developing my pickup skills for several years and figured I could share a few things with the community. I don't know how much it will benefit everyone, but if at least one gay/bi guy can get something out of this, it was worth it.
1. Find a straight wingman
Straight friends make great wingmen. They are awesome social proof. They demonstrate that you can make friends outside of LGBT circles, which will accept just about anyone gay right off the bat. Straight guys are also very useful at the bar.
A straight man can easily open a set that you would otherwise feel AA over. Let them think he's your SO, then have him disqualify himself by explicitly saying he's straight and here with you. By this point, the set should be open and everyone will be focused on you.
2. Get in shape and dress better
Men love eye candy. We are extraordinarily quick to judge someone based on how they look. If you are fat, try to lose a little weight. Learn to dress better. Check out the Male Fashion Advice and Fitness for advice on this.
When picking your gym, try to find one that is a hangout for the local LGBT crowd. Many YMCA's serve this role. Even though it's not always the best place for pickup, finding gay friends at the gym can come in handy later.
If you're planning to be going out to clubs and other areas where it could be hard to hear or in public places where you can't be open about your sexuality, it's not a bad idea to invest in a bandanna or two. At the very least, strategically place your keys according to Hanky Code. Although it may take work to fit into any outfit, adding a bandanna will give other guys the confidence to know that you are gay and approach you.
3. Talk to everyone
This isn't just good advice for straight PUAs. Talking to people builds social proof and is a great way to meet new people.
This is especially good advice if you are attracted to "straight" seeming gay guys. Non-flamboyant gay men tend to spend time with other non-flamboyant men. You're much less likely to meet these kinds of people at LGBT bars, parades, and club meetups.
4. Touch Everyone
The biggest advantage gay men have is that it is more socially acceptable to touch people. Use this to your advantage. Kino is a great tool for building attraction. Hug all of your friends as a greeting. Hug people you just met. Don't be afraid to touch others on the shoulder or back, especially in noisy rooms. You'll only make yourself look nervous if you don't.
5. Don't trap yourself in the first relationship you see
I've seen many gay friends jump at the chance to be with someone and then get stuck in a relationship going nowhere. It’s easy to get one-itis when so few of the people you meet are also potential dates. Don’t trick yourself into thinking you won’t find anybody better and never settle for less than what you deserve.
6. Don’t be a scumbag
Wear a condom. I can't stress this enough. The LGBT community has gotten a bad rap for being promiscuous and AIDS ridden. Although this is not entirely true, it's just an all around smart move. Also, from my own experiences, almost half of the LGBT community is celibate or rarely has sex with anyone. The other half makes up for them. If you are with someone who is uncomfortable with things (for whatever reason), wearing a condom and using some lube will ease the tension.
You know how much gay men love to gossip. If one guy thinks you are a scumbag, it will only take a few days to spread around your whole community. Do what you can to preserve your image. If you are going to break up with someone, let him down softly and don’t say anything behind their back.
7. If you’re in a bad mood, hide it until you’re happy
Depression is an incredibly common problem for gay people. Even when you are in a bad mood, force yourself to go out and smile when you are sad. If you force yourself to maintain a positive demeanor, eventually it will become your actual demeanor.
On top of that, nobody wants to date someone who looks unhappy all of the time. They’re not fun to be around and leave you feeling worse than before you saw them.
I things get really bad, get help. I lost a boyfriend to suicide a little more than 4 years ago and believe me, we just want everyone to be happy. The whole point of learning pickup is to improve your life. Sometimes you have to take time out to fix your life before you can make things work with someone else.
8. If you’re in the closet...
Relax. Most people don’t really care if you’re gay. Go find someone who is alright with who you are and hit the clubs with them. They don’t have to be from your normal circle. Also, if they’re gay and someone calls you out on visiting a club with them, you can say they wanted someone to go with them.
