My father is very smart, but socially autistic. LOL. Apparently you are unfamiliar with what the legal definition of self-defense is. Put another way, one of us has watched too much fiction, but that person isn't myself. Every self-defense statute in the U.S. (and likely in the developed world) allows for one to defend oneself against an active attack. Self defense, however, almost never justifies subsequent criminal acts - such as what we might have witnessed above. Definitely look into it. Knowledge is power.

Defending oneself involves blocking/parrying an attempted strike. It may also involve incapacitating the other person if an attack is ongoing. Assaulting another person involves launching your own attack. Sounds like Tim McGraw did the latter.
