I think the best beginner's squat is a goblet squat. But, squatting to a bench is also a common starting point. Or you can do both. Start with really light weights and make small increases over time. Focus on getting the stretch into the squat with hips pushing back like sitting on a toilet. Also keep in mind there are different squatting techniques when researching on your own.

My take is everybody can decide what they want to eat. I don't care. A high vegetable content diet is almost a perfect diet, just add meat to get enough quality protein (getting enough quality protein on a vegan diet over minimum for survival intake is really difficult) and your 99% there. Once it becomes an identity that they need to project to everyone then fuck them. They're not worth my time. That said I've never met a vegan who didn't proclaim they were vegans and wanted everyone to see how…

For those of you reading and not acting take note. This is how you are successful at self-improvement: Act and put in physical effort, then research. Improving is much easier when you have a frame of reference. It becomes a circular process: act then study. You also want to create small goals at then beginning and reevaluate your progress at the end. And always have at least one big, obscene, out of reach goal to guide your direction.

One thing I am doing which has really helped my speaking voice is to take weekly singing lessons and practicing singing for 15-30 minutes every day. It became noticeable to me after I started working on a Johnny Cash song. Just avoid the show tunes.

Stronglifts is a great program. Make sure to start from the beginning and progress to plan. Be patient. Results will sneak up on you in a 2-3 months but it'll be worth it.
/r/askMRP23/09/15 09:52 PM
2

You're getting ahead of yourself. 2 months of lifting isn't very long. Keep things simple: Continue to lift. To build muscle, eat at a slight surplus making sure to get enough protein. There is no need to make things more complicated until you have years of consistent lifting under your belt.

You are on the right track. You didn't mention responses to shit tests. With respect to shit tests, sometimes the best response is none. Silence is probably not the best response for "comfort tests," though. That is where I need work identifying which is which. Hey, check out a "functional fitness gym," if there is one in your area. I currently go to one and most of the members are normal sized and still very serious about their workouts. I am able to do a great powerlifting routine with body weight accessory work and one of these. Another option is to face your fear head on and workout at a powerlifting gym. Recording your intake helps, but you really need to find the root cause of your compulsion to eat and experiment to find a way to control it. Some people eat when they are emotional, for example. So they need to learn to recognize when they want to eat due to actual hunger vs emotions or habit to gain control. There are books on this subject like "The End of Overeating" and "The Beck Diet Solution". I prefer trial and error, though, to zero in on what actually works for yourself. For me it is a …

Realistic goals are good when not used as a buffer (to avoid an uncomfortable situation such as rejection) but as a method of achieving the habit of success. In the long run, though, make your goals unrealistic and create daily habits to move you one step toward them. Over time, you'll be surprised far you've gone.

Have you written a post on meditation? I searched your blog and didn't see anything. What is your take on how to do it, the benefits, etc.? I don't do meditation myself but am curious about starting. One thing I do do is play music and sometimes feel I'm in the zone when totally focused on what I'm playing. When I was younger I played around with self hypnosis and there seems to be a lot of similarities to that and meditation.

As someone who grew up with a type 1 bi-polar relative, I sincerely wish you luck controlling it. The drugs prescribed have terrible side effects, but at least for her, when she went off of them things would get real weird, real quick. She would always end up hospitalized. She is a very prideful person and her self-awareness, as far as I can tell, is non-existent. She's had ECT a few times and is probably a rare extreme case.

I can't argue with you there. Most people want results now so setting short term goals that they can make satisfy that desire. The method I follow requires very little effort to track, that is why I ended up with it. (I hate tracking things manually. I am always looking for ways to simplify and automate things.) “If it is important, do it every day, if it isn’t, don’t do it at all.” This is a quote attributed to wrestling Olympic Gold Medalist Dan Gable (via Dan John) http://danjohn.net/2012/09/…

I don't like using "SMART" goals for fitness. The method I found works best for me is: Define your vision or dream of where I want to be. Dream big. Figure out what daily or x times a week habits will eventually get you there. Create those habits by doing them every day. Periodically evaluate if the habits are working and make small changes to improve progress toward dream.

Once you get tired of trimming your beard yourself, try having a barber do it and see if that makes any difference. I started going to a barber a few months back. Nail biter for probably my first 24 years. I decided to stop one day when I was working in the woods for a week and my nails were covered in dirt. For some people lifting becomes their mission and that's cool. But, I want to encourage everyone to make being a person who lifts who they are and explore other avenues for their mission. Lifting takes a toll on the body (especially as you get older), and it is really nice to have other interests which don't. A good example which works for me is making music. My default response to the "Are you mad at me?" or "Is there something wrong?" shit test is "No" and acting as if nothing is wrong. My reasoning for this is when it gets to that point where she asks, it is already too late to correct something which did get me upset (if I am upset). Any honest answer would validate her frame and make me sound butthurt or at least be perceived as that way.

Try this: The moment she blows up, end the conversation and remove attention from her. Once she flips out, the conversation is done being rational and there will be no working things out. Give up trying to do that and find something useful to do. Don't give her attention again until she starts behaving like an adult.

Of those two options, I would go to her movie and make sure to enjoy myself. I'll usually make fun of the movie afterwards. Talk loud and confident. Joke with everybody. Pretend like everyone is your friend. Don't drink much. Just focus on having a good time and giving others around a good time. Do something out of character and draw attention to yourself. A good start is to stand by the keg and talk to everyone as they fill up their cups. Maybe even take charge of the keg. Be proactive, take charge and help out the host. Get on their good side. Get a running joke or gag going. Assume girls who stay around you are in…

You don't negotiate for sex (I see giving her options as negotiating). Let her know what you want and when she says no, go about your business as if nothing happened (show now emotional response). In this case you were good because you just went to sleep.

The best response I've found when someone is annoying is to immediately call them out on it in a serious, non-emotional, non-aggressive tone and hold frame. This is time sensitive and only works right after the offense. If you stew about it first then it is too late. Definitely don't be passive-aggressive.

This is a really effective strategy which I use for long term self-improvement. Pick your goal or goals. Define what daily habits will move you towards your goal or goals. Do the habits everyday so that they become automatic. Reevaluate periodically. Some caveats: Don't limit yourself to "SMART" goals. Consider dream goals which may seem unachievable. Always have at least one goal. Find enjoyment in what you do daily. If you can't do something daily then it isn't important (within reason...most …

One thing I hate is when my wife brings up at a bar with her friends how I'm doing so well and losing weight. Then they all have to ask me how much weight I've lost. This numb…

Interesting thoughts. The redefinition of rape to be very broad is definitely a power grab. SJW types now are doing everything they can to get as much power as they can while society seems to be supporting them. I hope I live long enough for the pendulum to swing back in the other direction. It may already be slowing down or turning around right now. It does seem that people are fed up, but that may just be my confirmation bias.

If you are doing manual labor during the day lifting boulders and shit, try upping your caloric intake to be a little more (like 250 calories/day) than normal and make most of that in the form of protein. To gain muscle, you need more calories to fuel muscle growth. Doing compound lifts like you mention are also good, but add them slowly and with enough nutrition to support recovery. You'll have to experimentally find this, though.

Keep in mind when you really get in to exercising often it physically takes a toll on your body. It could take up to a few months for your body to adjust to where you recover enough where you have energy left over...especially if you have a shit diet. For mentally challenging things, something similar applies. When you learn new things that you apply in daily life, it takes time to internalize them. Eventually the changes will become effortless.

Right now, I don't follow C & FO explicitly. In most cases there is no need to because my wife commonly already defers to me. I don't have to label it. If I were to tell my wife that I'm the Captain and she is the First Officer, it wouldn't go over well. Instead, I use my actions. I like to find what works by experimenting over time instead of rigidly adhering to any set of rules.

Isn't marriage just an LTR with a golden parachute for one spouse at the end? To me it isn't that simple. Most who find the red pill while already in a marriage want to convert from a blue pill marriage to a red pill marriage. If you are in an LTR and learn red pill, if your girlfriend doesn't go along, then next her. With a marriage especially with kids, many want to keep the marriage intact.

OK. There are a couple of things at play in my mind here and I just thought about it to where it made sense to me, but never wrote it down until now. The most important things is I take responsibility for improving our marriage relationship by adjusting my behavior. My wife is going to do whatever she wants and I don't directly control her. Generally protein from whole food is best. You can supplement with powder. Whey is fast digesting and best suited for around workouts. I use a whey/casein blend for my normal protein and rotate brands. Yeah. Food costs money. Cheapest sources is to buy in bulk and on sale. A trainer at my gym who trains pro athletes (Major League baseball players) tells his athletes that knowing how to cook is a secret weapon.

If that was me, I would have felt I'd done well. Are you unsure how you handled things or just wanted to get this off your chest? Some of my days with my wife are similar to what you describe. Outside of the office, I just have fun and joke around, not really flirty, but just act however I feel like at the moment without any specific goal. One rule I have is to never escalate. At the office, it is just business. This has worked for me so far. I have been getting more and more attention from middle aged women lately, though. I am already married to one...that's enough for me.

I can't do that. My wife likes to argue (like it is part of her job) and has a pretty blue pill view of sexual strategy. I mean, she recognizes red pill type things, but if we discuss it she'll defend blue pill. When I disagree with her and do decide to defend my position it usually ends up me being an asshole (ad hominem). I laugh when she switches to that tactic.

The best thing I learned about the red pill with my wife was to shut my fucking mouth about it. She doesn't want to know the changes you plan to make and the direction you want to change. Once you tell her it'll all seem less authentic to her. Gradually make whatever changes you want and hold frame once they get to the point where she is noticing.

Definitely get an internship or co-op. Civil engineering firms are everywhere, so apply to all that you can at job fairs, online and in person. Not sure how far along you are in your studies, but get an EIT (Professional Engineer-in-training) as soon as you can. Networking really helps. Join an engineering frat (like Theta Tau), engineering societies or find a group of engineers who already have co-ops and befriend them. Co-ops are a great way to graduate and already have a job lined up.

I agree with this poster. With the high pay/high stress job, you'll be able to set yourself up for a much better future. I guess it depends on how important your future is to you vs. the now. Be sure to use the stressful experiences to learn how to avoid them negatively affecting you. From an SMV perspective, I like he idea of using your 20's to "slay dragons." The best gym is one where a group of men get together and pitch in to create their own private lifting area. Two things I learned about being in a relationship with someone who throws emotion at me are: Be a mirror to the emotion and not a sponge. Recognize her emotion (you can even say you recognize it to her) but don't let it cause you to get emotional in response. Set consistent boundaries in the relationship and enforce them. My foot response when a boundary is crossed is to withdraw attention.

Hard for me to say without knowing the individuals. It is possible for her to create the environment where he can feel comfortable exploring being more alpha if he chooses. But, yeah, I agree it is probably more the man's issue here (as a man in a relationship, I operate like it is always the man who needs to take action and the woman to follow -- it doesn't really always work out that way).

I do the same thing with respect to women. If a woman isn't attractive, I ignore them romantically. I can go into a bar with 20% beautiful women and 80% ugly women and I'll only focus in to the beautiful ones. But, I won't go on living my life thinking that all women are beautiful and how the beautiarchy is keeping us men down.

I had been working on self-improvement for years already. The triggers for me to become more aggressive in self-improvement and discovering the red pill were: The unexpected death of our child care lady who helped us raise our kids for 8 years and whom I talked with every day she watched them. A few months later my wife's sister died alone unexpectedly and wasn't discovered for many days afterwards. We had to take care of all the funeral arrangements ourselves. This helped me fully recognized my…

Single TRP members would be wise to seriously consider not marrying. Since discovering RP post marriage w/2 kids, my strategy is to continue to improve myself. I am not going to pursue divorce unless there is good reason (real abuse or cheating). I will do my best to live up to my marriage vows on my own terms. If my wife chooses divorce, then so be it.

There are some who say you have to "fake it until you make it." But I disagree with this strategy the way you are doing it. Don't focus on the end game but the process. For example with a goal of improving your masculinity by building muscle, you don't tell yourself that you are a muscular dude when you aren't. Instead you focus on what you are doing right now to make that goal a reality. This would be lifting heavy weights with a plan which increases the weight you lift over time. Then when you…

I have so many embarrassing stories from when a kid, but the instances which I keep hitting myself over were when girls would go out of their way to talk to me and be isolated with me, but I wouldn't escalate. I basically forced their hand into putting me into the friend zone.

Zinc One dose before sex makes my body more responsive to sexual stimulus. I take this with Magnesium and B6 at night. Avoid ingesting calcium right before. L-Arginine 3-4 pills makes my penis reach what I believe to be its full potential. Changes the feeling of sex somewhat. Once I orgasm dick stays semi-hard instead of going limp. I don't take this often because supposedly high dosage helps tumor growth. Fish Oil I take 10 g per day. Most noticeable result is my dry skin on my elbow went away.…

I disagree that we can "choose...what we feel." We can influence how we feel about certain things, but what we feel isn't necessarily a choice. The choice is in how we react to the feelings. The best course of action is to be aware of our feelings, recognizing them for what they are, and choose how they'll affect us and our actions. This is a skill that will take practice.

Married with two kids, I got a vasectomy. I felt pressure or a "blue balls" like feeling after sex for about a year afterwards but the intensity gradually faded over time. I have an at home sperm test and am shooting blanks last time I checked (two more in the drawer). The doctor showed me what he cut out and used a clamp. Sometime they don't clamp the tube or it falls off and it fuses back together. There are different options to explore before you get it done. I have no drop in sexual appetite…

Do women who have tattoos/piercings automatically appear as slutty/unattractive/crazy? No, but it would be a tell for a higher likelihood bad choices. Are there any "special cases" or types of tattoos/piercings that are attractive? Can they heighten a woman's SMV? That is one huge benefit from being in the Marine Infantry. When somebody hurls emotion at me, I've developed an ability to react with no emotion back. Sometimes I'll smirk. Inside I may be screaming, but I mostly only yell when I choose to. I've found the following helps; Keep shoulders relaxed. Take deep breaths. Slow down your talking. Pause longer before talking. Talk to yourself about how you recognize that you could show emotion right now but you won't because you are in control. Remember …

Yeah. I'm not interested in playing rugby anymore. Too much male nudity for me. For staying in shape, I alternate days of Oly Weightlifting with running 3-4 miles. That plus core work 3 times a week and a controlled calorie diet with an lbm in g protein target has worked wonders over the past years. I'm married, so I just have to keep my SMV higher than hers (in her mind). It is a moving target though because my wife is exercising and watching what she eats just about every day as well.

Individual psychotherapy can be useful, but you have to do the work yourself. The therapist can really only guide you. I would argue that most therapists aren't good at their jobs and went into psychology because they had issues with themselves, so ruthlessly screen them. If one doesn't click or seems to not be working out, next them. My experience with marriage therapy as a means of fixing a marriage is it is useless. The only response I've found to be effective to the "Is there something wrong?" question is to say, "No." while showing and maintaining zero emotion. That usually ends this line of questioning. My response to "Are you mad?" or "Why are you acting weird?" is "Huh? I don't know what you are talking about." From my parents: - Keep being clean (as in keep taking showers), be yourself and somebody will come along who will be right for you. What I gathered from movies, media, etc.: - Be a sensitive guy who isn't afraid to cry and a woman will eventually fall in love with you. - Show interest in women by doing nice things for the like buying them flowers, taking them out to dinner, and they will decide if they want to become more serious. - Women define when I am behaving inappropriately. When a woman …

Most common problem is girls try to lead or pull while dancing backwards. If they pull when I am the lead, I just let them dance away from me on their own and they get the message or I hold her very close. It is hilarious to watch two women dancing when there is no lead. They usually end up dancing sideways and take turns doing spins.

If you get the book, keep it on the down-low. Nobody wants to think that they're BPD especially if they are. A common trait of BPD is if you tell them they're BPD, they'll turn around and accuse you of being BPD. Another thing to look out for is gaslightning. When in an argument, I swear my wife would tell me what I said to her and it would be completely inaccurate. For her, what I say goes through her emotions, is changed to justify her emotions (so she can blame them on me) then is stored as "…

Your wife sounds a lot like mine (taking things personally and holding a grudge). I started going down the MMSL path, but realized that MMSL's specific recommendations didn't work too well with my wife. So, I kept trying different things. This is probably a better suited topic for /r/fitness or /r/weightroom. It seems to me you are defining fitness as cardiovascular fitness and then saying that lifting weights is not optimal for it. Cardiovascular fitness is just one aspect of fitness. Lots of these ideas were from Dr. Glover podcasts and No More Mr. Nice Guy. Forget being outcome dependent. That'll totally mess with you. Forget about evaluating how well you both did afterwards. My experience is sex has ups and downs, and when it is really good you know it. Maybe evaluate how well you met these points instead.
