Thank you so much for writing this. I have felt so much of the same angst you have described. None of the given reasons for misogyny in the bible make a lick of sense to me, no matter who explains it. It feels so wrong. As I get older, the stories disturb me more and more. Why was Hagar so casually tossed out of the house to die in the desert? Why does Eve's naiveté mean that women deserve painful periods, childbirth, and subjugation to this day? Why am I dirty just because I bleed once a month?…

Very true. Have you read Alison Josephs (she runs jewinthecity.com.)? I really like reading what she has to say. I love Judaism and Jewish culture so much and I think there are a lot of communities who treat women exceptionally well. Yes, women often do work outside the home - they're lawyers, doctors, and all sorts of things! I think they're a lot less sexist than the Protestant Christianity that I was exposed to when I was growing up. Thank you so much for responding. I hope I didn't offend yo…

I agree completely. Faith was the only thing that ever relieved my chronic anxiety and I understand it as an emotional support system. I just wish all that misogyny didn't come with it.

Of course not! Everyone comes from different backgrounds here. I totally agree. Ideology and how it's implemented matters. Actions matter. I hope I didn't imply that your experiences aren't real or that misogyny in your birth religion isn't real.

I think this is a great question! As other commenters have mentioned, misogyny is pretty universal. Also, each community is unique and has its own pluses and minuses. Please note that these are my own opinions and experiences and may not reflect everyone else's. 😊 I was raised Evangelical Christian. I grew up listening to Joyce Meyers, T.D. Jakes, Joel Osteen, and Charles Stanley. Maybe it was just me, but I felt a lot of guilt and confusion as a young girl. I felt like God was punishing me with…

That's terrible! I'm so sorry you went through that. People have no idea about the consequences for the person on the other side of the screen. I hope you're doing better now. 💕

That's a very compelling thought! If I asked myself, "Who benefits from this?", then that would be the answer.

That's awful! I hate that anything that's critical of porn is "sex negative", whatever that means. Porn ruins relationships, exploits women, children, and the poor, and increases human trafficking. People need to know this stuff, but it consistently gets swept under the rug.

I believe it. A few years ago, I was very concerned about free speech (especially Big Tech censorship) on the internet and decided to give one "free speech" website a try. It was BAD. There was maybe one person of color on the entire platform and one woman. They were the most fun people to listen to. Everyone else was literally posting pictures of swastikas and praising Hitler. I'd take bad moderation over no moderation any day.

I watched this video without sound and I've got to say that the girl in this video looks so sad. She's super young, too. What has our society done to her that makes her feel like she's got to get validation from gross men on the internet?

This is something I don't understand - why do they waste their time tearing someone else down when they could be working on doing better themselves? Why did they have to shame you for something that wasn't your fault? I hope you're doing better and are in an environment with better people. 😊

I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and I struggle with feeling good enough every single day. I can't do most of the things that other people take for granted without serious physical consequences. If I go to the grocery store, my body will ache for days afterwards. I would love to have friends - maybe even love one day - but what do I have to offer someone else? I'm lucky to live with my mom, who is very understanding, but I wish I could do more. Last week, I tried to paint a coloring page. It turn…

This guy would also immediately accuse any woman, who'd stand her ground in a discussion and call out his behaviour as "shrill" and "crazy", or - even funnier - to be a lesbian. OMG, that's like all the men on my dad's side of the family. One time, when I was about 13, my (much older) cousin was watching football with my dad, uncles, and grandpa. A car commercial came on and it showed a man buying his wife a car. The wife had a cute, short-ish hairstyle. Of course, my cousin had to call her a le…

That's awful! Thank you so much for sharing your story. My mom often feels really bad about how she stayed married to my narc dad for 17 years. I knew she's not the only one who stayed in an abusive relationship for a long time. I can tell she feels guilty about it, but there's so much pressure to "stand by your man" that it makes it even harder to leave. I'm so sorry you went through that. I hope you're happy, healthy, and thriving. 💕

I agree completely. I have chronic fatigue syndrome, so my mental and physical energy is extremely limited. Doing too many "productive" things can literally make me sicker. I'm in a crash right now and it isn't fun. Even if you don't have a chronic illness, sometimes you need some time to recharge. This doesn't make you lazy or bad. Setting aside a day where you don't have to do anything can really make a difference.

To be honest, I like to listen to books (or lectures) while playing games - especially grindy ones, like Farming Simulator or Minecraft. I've learned so much about a lot of different things by combining the two. 🤷‍♀️

My dad did that to me all the time, too. He'd embarrass me in public - especially in the parking lot where there were tons of other people - by walking in a goofy way or using an obnoxiously loud voice. I'd laugh nervously and ask him to stop. I never laughed because I thought it was funny.
/r/FemaleDatingStrategy12/10/20 12:11 PM

Exactly. It's not about "compassion", it's about taking away women's rights. That's what this "identifying" BS is: it's about allowing predatory men into places they have no right to be in.

That is so dumb. You wouldn't hire someone who is accused of armed robbery to work at a bank. It doesn't matter that this person might be innocent; hiring (or dating) someone in this situation puts others (or yourself) at risk. To do so would be extremely negligent.

I'm glad someone here brought this up. I found out about this yesterday. It always floors me when men do dumb things like this. Yeah, women's rights were basically nonexistent when my mom was born. My grandmother couldn't leave my grandfather because she would not be allowed to rent an apartment without a husband. It didn't matter that my grandfather did some really messed-up things.

This. I've been reading The Lesbian Heresy, by Sheila Jeffreys, and she described the concept of non-revocable consent. She says it's common for the dom to go further than the sub initially consented to. This problem, that in S/M consent once given at the beginning of a scene is in effect considered irrevocable, does seem to parallel the situation of women in marriage or relationship rape who are considered to have given consent to sexual intercourse in perpetuity by virtue of their marriage or …

Good for you! I'm 23 and a virgin, too. I would much rather be alone than with someone who isn't right for me. The world has more than enough of women forcing themselves to fit the patriarchal mold. Keep your crown on, Queen, and don't let anyone tell you that your standards are too high. 👑

What do you want to bet that these people have never even read FDS? I'm really mad at this article; it dismisses women's suffering as just "bad experiences." Fuck that. The problems that women face are universal, Ruth. Women should be angry at how they're treated. Every single woman in my life has been abused at the hands of men. My aunt was raped. You know what's insane? My mom says that my dad said these types of things back when they were dating. How does it make any sense that a man who agrees to leave his own children in the forest to starve to death isn't the wicked one? If I were Gretel, I think I'd have stayed in the witch's house. As a child of divorced parents, I can absolutely attest to the fact that some men only care about the children when it suits them and to hurt their ex-spouses. That's exactly what I went through! I saw that sub! I noped out of there really fast. I saw several posts of men dressing as women and "male feminists". It made me want to vomit. Why aren't women allowed to be in peace? Why do we have to accept everybody who wants to come into our spaces? If you ever needed proof of the patriarchy, well, there it is.

Maybe it's because some members mention liking r/gendercritical and sorely missing its absence? I'm gender critical myself and I hate how J. K. Rowling was treated. I wish you could be allowed to say that on the internet, but, once again, women's feelings don't matter. I think men just don't like to hear different opinions.

A few days ago, I was watching a talk given by Sheila Jeffreys and she mentioned how, in the 70's, there was this campaign by feminists against the concept of mental health, since it reinforces the idea that women are crazy or hysterical, not reasonably upset after a lifetime of abuse at the hands of men. Not sure if I agree, since several women in my family and I really benefit from seeing psychiatrists, but this idea is interesting. I think a lot of women get mistreated by mental health profes…

In high school, my gym class was co-ed (bad idea) and sometimes the kids from the autistic class (not such a good idea) would join for a short while. I was doing some laps around the gym when I noticed that one of the autistic kids was fondling his gym shorts, dead eyes staring into the distance. I was shocked. I must have said something, because a teacher stepped in and told him that what he was doing was inappropriate. I feel bad because people with autism aren't always the best at social cues…

The times I was physically assaulted, it wasn't by a stranger...it was by my own father. That doesn't mean strangers haven't acted awfully suspicious around me, especially when I was very young. EDITED TO ADD: I just remembered some of the things that happened to me when I was very young. When I was about five years old, a boy I barely knew - I think he was about ten - convinced me to sneak off with him to the bathroom at the daycare. He said he was playing doctor. I'd also like to recommend Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Experience, by Adrienne Rich. Another theory that's worth investigating is the idea of political lesbianism. This one is based on the principle that sexuality is learned, not innate, and that you can choose not to be straight. (I know this goes against "born this way" thought, but I find it fascinating!) Whatever OP chooses/doesn't choose, I'm here for it!

I agree completely. The way society encourages women to butcher themselves is dreadful. We look at foot binding in horror today, but is plastic surgery that much better? Why are we told that to have value we have to cut, burn, and inject ourselves with silicon? Are we really doing all of this for ourselves? Anyway, I don't want to shame women who choose to get plastic surgery, especially after something like a mastectomy or an accident. I don't blame people for wanting to fit in.

I made a whole other thread for what I'm about to say, but it seems oddly relevant to the subject here. TL;DR: It's about the peer pressure I felt to conform and put a boy I didn't like's feelings above my own. Six years ago, when I was a junior in high school, I met a boy in class. Honestly, I'm surprised that she wasn't harsher on videogames. I love games, but there's so much misogyny in so many titles. There's a huge skin gap between male and female characters. There's so much misogyny in the culture itself. Take, for example, the debate over the "casual" game. Notice how games that appeal to women, like The Sims, aren't considered "real games"? Being conventionally pretty will not get you a better man nor help you love yourself more, especially if your insides are all messed up and twisted from the process. You can say that again! As someone who has struggled with anorexia, I can confirm this is the case. At my thinnest, 96 pounds, I still felt fat and ugly. My dad still treated me like crap. Boys still made fun of me. This, 100%. When my mom got married to my dad, she didn't get a ring. She let it slide, since they were both kind of poor and in college. Later on, he bought a grand piano, 20k speakers, but never a diamond ring, which was incredibly important to my mom. After fifteen years of marriage, he bought her a tiny diamond ring on a plain gold band. At this point in time, my dad was also a dentist. (Guess who put him through school?) They were the suffragettes, I think. These were women like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady-Stanton, and Sojourner Truth. After that came the radical feminists. They came about after women got the right to vote, but were still suffering unfair treatment in the workplace and at home. They worked to get rid of sex-based stereotyp…

Wow, really? I can't say I'm surprised, though. I think men just make things up because they can sometimes. All this talk about IQ reminds me of the time on Seinfeld when George Costanza cheats on an IQ test.

I had to take one, too, in high school. (I was having some issues with attending school, but I won't bore you with the details.) It was exactly the way you described. There was a word test, a shapes test, and a few others. My dad used to brag about his IQ all the time. It was so tacky. 🙄

That's awful that people are so judgmental! It sounds like your parents had a really hard life. I've read similar stories about people who fled oppressive regimes. I can't say I blame them.

I would support that, actually. Lesbians have put in a lot of work for women's and LGB rights, but get barely any support back. Also, the T's and the Q's have absolutely wrecked lots of women-only spaces. Gay men are still men and are often incredibly misogynistic.

Gosh, whenever I hear the words nuance, strawman, or ad-hominem I do an involuntary eye roll. Like, I get it, you think you're the smartest man in the universe. Can you please shut up now?

That's such a shame! I started reading some Sheila Jeffreys yesterday. (I found a PDF online. The library's closed, okay? 😆) I was only able to read a few chapters - thanks, brain fog! It was really good! There's so many radical feminist ideas that I think we should be able to discuss. They're so important for women's safety and psychological health, but bringing them up makes you a bigot. It makes me so mad.

Wow, that sounds so rough! One of my doctors is from India. During one of my appointments, she told me about how hard she had to work to come to the US. She told me it was a matter of survival. I thought she meant just things like being financially independent. This puts it into a whole different perspective. Thank you so much for sharing.

Oh, she's absolutely doing better! I think my mental health has improved since coming here, too. It's so weird how much casual misogyny is out there and how much of it you can absorb on a daily basis. For example, I'd be watching a male YouTuber, then something he'd say would the hair on the back of my neck stand up. FDS has really helped me hone in on why certain things men say give me the chills.

You've really got a point. FDS doesn't come naturally to a lot of people. My mom married my dad thinking he would put the time and effort into becoming a doctor. Instead, he laid around while she busted her butt to become a dentist. His NVM antics became worse when my sister and I were born, but my mom still felt guilty for years after divorcing him. Internalized misogyny is really hard to break out of.

If you read Genesis another way, women were made superior to men. For example, if you read the story of creation, you'll notice that the "simpler" things were made first. Eve was the crown jewel of all creation because she was made last. Also, give the last chapter of Proverbs a re-read. The Woman of Valor is an inspiration in a lot of ways: she makes her own money and is worth her weight in gold.

So true. A lot of the people on Reddit claiming to be women just aren't. Reading cupittycakes's original comment, I had the feeling that the person claiming to be a lesbian was not really a woman. What type of woman-loving-woman doesn't see women as a prize? That's right - a man. 😆

I've had a similar experience. Last year I worked at a dental office and this really creepy old man came in and started asking a bunch of personal questions. You're right! The fifteenth amendment, ratified in 1870, gave black men the right to vote. Women were only allowed to vote in 1920. Of course, there were a lot of laws meant to suppress the black vote that were made during that time, especially with things like literacy tests and grandfather clauses.

No, I don't think anyone resented me. I felt extremely conspicuous and invisible at the same time, if that makes sense. My parents were concerned for me. I hated myself, though. I felt like my childhood had been stolen. I had gone from "normal looking" to wearing braces, bras, and glasses. Instead of worrying about a test, I lived in constant fear of my period striking with a painful, bloody vengeance. I thought I was ugly and fat. I started wearing baggy clothes - not only to hide my body, but …

I've literally experienced the opposite of this. Once, I was dressed nicely - hair and makeup done, nice dress - while at the grocery store when a middle-aged man came up to me and asked me if I worked there. I stammered out a no and meekly shook my head. At the time, I felt really embarrassed. I knew he was trying to make me self-conscious and it worked. If it happened now, I'd just pretend I didn't hear him. Men like that can get bent. 😆

Men have no business telling women what to do, especially when it comes to having children. Men aren't the ones putting their health at risk to deliver the babies. They're not the ones who will do the childcare. They're not the ones who have to live with the emotional scarring.

I also find it telling that he had to ask them to call her Dr. Lori. Why do women have to fight to be called their proper name? I've seen people call my mom, a dentist, Mrs. or Ms. I've met a college professor who goes through the exact same thing. Do they think women don't deserve the basic respect? It makes my blood boil.

He spent all their money on a CD player (it was the mid-eighties, so they were pretty expensive,) and refused to get a job. For a whole year. He didn't do the dishes, either.
