I love the boobs on the post-it, I am totally stealing that. For me, doing things that are normally his responsibility has kind of backfired on me. I’ve done a things just to be nice that have now turned into expectations. Laying out his work clothes the night before, laying out clothes for him when he comes home, changing the air filter, etc. I’ve just accumulated a bunch of new chores basically, that he doesn’t express gratitude for anymore, they’re just the new normal. I kind of want to stop …

That’s an awesome set of hobbies! In the same way that some women go to college so they can find a husband, I would start hanging out at the biggest game store in your area. If you want a nerdy, virgin, autistic guy, you will have a much higher chance of success finding him there than pretty much anywhere else. You also might enjoy it! If you’re up for it, doing some one shot ttrpgs will give you a chance to interact with guys in a controlled setting (they honestly might be too focused at any ki…

Do you have any hobbies? Have you considered attending events at a local game store? Think ttrpgs, MTG or 40K tournaments, board game nights, etc.

This is exactly what’s happening. I pray to God my sons don’t end up like this.

It’s the worst, isn’t it? I’m sorry you’re dealing with it too - sometimes it feels like the lack of understanding of how bad it is is almost as bad as the sleep deprivation itself. I told him about the car crash thoughts, but he wasn’t really listening, because he just said “oh, yeah?” Which… I feel like that should be alarming? I’m pretty sure he was off in his own thoughts when I was telling him that, so I just stopped talking and he didn’t even really notice. We have had a ton of talks thoug…

Thank you so much - you always give the best advice! I think you’re spot on that at this point, the answer is to just hold him to his word undramatically. He’s suggested that he take care of baby wakeups while he’s gaming multiple times, and each time he suggests it he’ll do it once or twice and then just kind of “forget” that he’s supposed to be doing it. With how our house is set up, if he’s on the Xbox he can easily hear and quickly respond to the baby. But if he’s downstairs on his computer,…

I really wish cosleeping worked for us, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately if I’m in the room, the baby insists on staying up to play, haha. He is apparently completely unbothered by his insane sleep schedule and just wants to explore. I absolutely agree that screen-based hobbies appear to be doing nothing to help my husband actually decompress. He used to go shooting, but he’s only done it once since the baby was born. He feels he doesn’t have the time to clean the guns after. I’ve suggest…

Thank you for your advice - the lack of sleep is definitely reaching a breaking point. I avoid driving after 4pm now, because I keep falling asleep behind the wheel. I have to blast music and the AC just to make it 10 minutes down the road to the grocery store. I am trusting that things will get better over time once the baby sleeps, I get caught back up on rest, and my husband isn’t burnt out anymore. If you don’t mind, how do you bring things up to your husband without sounding naggy? It’s nev…

I think you’re right that continuing to perform warmth isn’t helpful. I actually had been in therapy for a while, and that’s one of the things we talked about. I struggle with what would happen if I stopped being so pleasant. I do think that leaving the house or insisting on couples counseling are too much for right now. My husband has good intentions but currently lacks the self discipline to follow through (hence why I’m losing respect). It’s not just with helping me - it’s eating healthy, wor…

Like others have said, it’s possible he’s a people pleaser. It’s also possible that he’s really grateful for the niceness/sex/financial help/cooking and feels chores are his contribution. It’s also possible he’s like me and a total control freak when it comes to chores! I can’t stand when other people try to help. I’ll own the fact that I’m particular about it, and I’ll end up crawling out of my skin watching the way others do the laundry or dishes, haha. I’d much rather my husband never did a s…

Thank you so much for this reminder! I’ve been stuck in self-criticism lately. Objectively, I’m doing pretty great. I’m 3 months postpartum and can wear all my clothes from before my first baby still. But I am so upset about my hair, I can barely stand to look at myself in the mirror. It never had a chance to recover from the first round of postpartum shedding, and now I have even more on top of it. A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I were showering together. As I was staring in horror at th…

I get it! When I first tried doing the “be sweet and soft” thing, I also interpreted it as “never let your man know you have feelings.” But honestly, that’s just as poisonous to a relationship as being a bitter complainer. Being soft isn’t about making yourself small and never sharing - it’s about being vulnerable. In the past, when I was having an off day, I would either force myself to be pleasant (and eventually burn out), or I would radiate anger and overwhelm. What I’ve been doing instead i…

I’m so glad it was helpful for you! This has been such an impactful experience for me - it’s the biggest breakthrough I’ve had yet on my journey to dismantle unhelpful patterns of behavior, and I felt compelled to share.

Of course! Usually, I would move really quickly and efficiently, always mentally coordinating three tasks ahead. Every waking moment was reserved for something productive. But think about when you’re taking a bubble bath. It’s not just about the bubbles, the warm water, the candles - a key part of the self-care aspect is the slowness of it all. So trying to maintain “bubble bath energy” throughout my day - especially when my husband comes home from work - has done wonders for the sense of peace …

I’m glad it resonated with you - I’m sure there are women out there who don’t struggle with slowing down and being soft. For me, this has been something I’ve been trying to get for years. It’s actually been one of my primary therapy goals. It was something about witnessing that energy in someone else (and experiencing how truly exhausting it was) that allowed me to finally make the mind-body connection. I’m hopeful that it’s a permanent change - there’s no way I want to let this go!

Thank you so much! It’s funny - I’ve heard this advice time and time again. And I really thought I was doing it. It wasn’t until I got a full dose of what it felt like to be around other women with that vibe that I realized just how much frenetic energy I’d been bringing into our home. I’m just so grateful my husband isn’t holding my past behavior against me! Not that I think he would, but he really is just happy to be present with me.

I wrote this post on my own, but since you mentioned it - I’ve actually been using AI to process the whole experience as I went. I could write a whole separate post on that, but in essence I’m a chronic overanalyzer. In the past, I would process this sort of thing with my husband - which is exactly what I’ve been trying to get away from. Whenever I noticed myself getting spun up, I’d write it out in ChatGPT, which helped keep me grounded and present with my husband.

I let him know I would love it if he was very blunt and direct with what behavior he would like from me. It’s great for him to be able to speak his mind authentically, and done wonders for my peace and satisfaction. If I’m getting overwhelmed about things, he’ll sit me down and say “you’re getting too worked up and it’s stressing me out. You need to calm down. Go take a bath and don’t come out until you feel relaxed again.” We’ve found that it’s so much better for us to communicate this way inst…

First of all, I think you’re really brave and obviously a strong woman for even being willing to entertain this relationship mindset shift in the midst of such pain and heartache. So regardless of the outcome, please give yourself credit for the vulnerability you’re displaying here! Second, there are some concerning behaviors you’re talking about. You want to be open to the possibility of positive change. But just in case, I wouldn’t quit your part time job. Others have spoken about the possibil…

I always love when this is shared, and yet I end up feeling a little hesitant to initiate. On the one hand, we have sex daily (we try to have a break once a month). I give BJs about 90% of the time, and he finishes orally at least once a week. We’re into some pretty dirty stuff, and there’s lots of excitement. And yet… when I surprise him with lingerie, he seems completely uninterested. I’ll walk by in skimpy outfits and he barely takes a glance. I try to be visually appealing and engaging, but …

Thanks for the suggestions! Without bragging too much, I’m a really good cook. I’m very confident in my ability to make healthy meals that taste good and are satisfying. I’ve tried every variation of healthy fried chicken under the sun, but at the end of the day, it’s just not the same. We had a discussion about what he wanted the diet to look like. In the past, he asked for smaller portions of the food I normally make, but it just wasn’t satisfying for him. This time, he asked me to maximize vo…

That would be helpful, and I think right now that realistically wouldn’t work for us. He’s under a ton of work stress at the moment, and part of me serving him right now is taking the thought and guesswork out of meals. I prepare all his food and track the calories for him, which I’m happy to do because I know how hard he’s working. It’s when he starts complaining about eating vegetables and asking my permission instead of just telling me “I want you to make fried chicken tonight” that I start t…

I like your suggestions, that’s helpful! His favorite foods are fried chicken, fried shrimp, bison bacon cheeseburgers with homemade brioche buns, and copycat Taco Bell chicken quesadillas. There’s not really an easy way to make those “healthy” and still satisfying. I honestly think rather than making disappointing versions of those things, save them for once every couple weeks as a surprise.

Thank you, you articulated this well! I find fulfillment in making healthy meals and taking the burden of calorie counting off of his plate. But it does feel like crossing a line when he asks my permission for junk food. Plus, I’m very conscious of my own food choices. I lost 30 lbs postpartum and actually weigh less than I did before I got pregnant. It feels uncomfortable to me when he’s asking repeatedly to switch my meal plan to fried food, right as I’m about to start preparing dinner. There …

I think the cooking and knitting check the “feminine hobbies” box perfectly fine. I have some ultra-feminine hobbies, as well as some more masculine hobbies (historical European martial arts, for example). Some men may be intimidated by how interesting your hobbies are and feel that they don’t measure up. It’s easy to say “don’t change yourself for a man,” but I suspect you’re also feeling some pressure to find a mate. You can either diminish your own hobbies to please a wider variety of men, or…

First things first, absolutely read The Empowered Wife before you do anything or pull away. Taking time for yourself is good, and it’s important you do it in the right way, not out of resentment. This book will teach you how to do that. With that out of the way - please understand that the first three months postpartum (at a minimum) aren’t real life. Whatever’s happening now is not a reflection of how things will be in the future. Please give yourself grace and your husband grace. You can read …

I had a very similar experience this year for my fiancé’s birthday. There was something I knew he would absolutely love, but was hesitant because of the price tag. I got mixed advice, and after reflecting I decided to go for it. He ended up absolutely loving it, and I’m so glad I went for it. This is something he’s always wanted but likely would never have gotten for himself. I think the key here is that the money for the gift is not coming out of joint funds, it’s not something you do regularly…

Okay, first things first - it’s admirable that you want to improve your health and appearance. Exercise, hydration, and not smoking will definitely help you feel your best. Reducing or eliminating social media usage will be great for your mental health, self-esteem, and motivation. As for the other stuff… when I was 18, nobody could change my mind, but I’ll try anyway. It sounds like you have good awareness of what you would like to improve, and areas where you feel you’re falling short. When dealing with lack of motivation, it can feel overwhelming. Are you familiar with Maslow’a hierarchy of needs? That’s how I think of self care. It’s hard to muster the motivation to do makeup if you’re dehydrated and don’t have enough nutrition. What you’re describing is very familiar to me. I would get random bursts of energy and motivation, try to put all these systems i…

I think you’re right - even though we make the same amount currently, he definitely takes financial leadership. So even though I can afford it without impacting the rest of our finances at all, I feel like he’d want to be consulted. It’s tough because all the things he wants, he just gets for himself! I keep a running list of the things he mentions he’d want someday, and they’re all in the $2-4k price range, haha

Sorry if I wasn’t clear! This is from my personal “fun money account” - I don’t use it often, so I have about $5k set aside (completely separate from bills, emergency savings, retirement, investments, etc). Yes, it’s 100% my money. We plan on me being a SAHM in the future, but for now I have 1 year left on my contract at work. Part of my thought process is that if I’m ever going to get him this gift, it would need to be while I’m still making a solid independent income.

It is so helpful to read what you wrote! We ended up naturally gravitating towards a D/s dynamic (not planned and neither of us have experience there - it just happened), and I’m recognizing similar struggles. Your feelings are very valid! As women, we’ve been conditioned not to ask directly for what we want. While youth is “prime time,” it’s not the only time. I was married for six years and got divorced. Started a new relationship at 31, currently pregnant and about to be 32 in a few days, and my wonderful boyfriend just recently asked my ring size. It’s not your age that’ll keep you from a good relationship - it’s the despair and worry about your age that’ll ward off good men. I love this!! It fills my cup to read stories of women embracing compassion and understanding with their men. I really strongly feel it’s a significant contribution to healing the hurt of our modern society. Men have been crapped on so much! Kudos to you for operating from a place of softness and love. ❤️

I’ll echo others’ comments about this actually being an area where (assuming you’re following traditional roles) you should take the lead. It’s the home! And since you’re feeling overwhelmed, think of ways where you can use support and then use the Laura Doyle method to express what you want. “I would love for these boxes to against that wall” or “this is a lot of work! A strawberry açaí refresher from Starbucks would make me so happy right now” or “I’d really love a shoulder rub after all this.…

Oh my gosh, same. I can’t look at that sub - gives me flashbacks to filling up milk jugs with free water at circle k to fill our toilet tanks. Those were some times for sure, haha

Thanks for the suggestion! Baby hype almost feels a bit like wedding hype, in that you’re being sold a bunch of cute extra stuff you may not need. I keep finding myself thinking, “haven’t women been birthing for thousands of years? What did they do before all this stuff?” It’s hard to resist the temptation sometimes though, so it’s a good reminder! I fully intend to put the pricey stuff on a registry and let family go nuts - anything leftover, I’ll go for gently used! As for the rock climbing, I…

That’s a wonderful idea - keeping the relationship the main priority is very important to me, and something we’ve discussed before. I’ve been feeling nervous about how it’s going to play out practically vs theoretically. I love what you said about those small acts of loving kindness on a daily basis. That’s going to be the key. Thank you so much for your input, it is always highly valued.

That’s a great reminder, thank you! I love the spice garden idea. I’ve actually struggled with being too frugal due to growing up in severe poverty. I’m working on being okay with investing in myself. And sewing is a great idea too! I’m contemplating just making my own maternity clothes, since I already have a healthy fabric stash and it seems silly to spend hundreds on clothes I’ll only need for a few months.

Thank you so much for this! The smoothie and bone broth ideas are fantastic. I know pregnancy changes your body, and I want to be realistic with my expectations. I also don’t want to just say “it is what it is” though and not keep up appearances and health! Thanks for the suggestion on Olaplex - didn’t know it can cause hair loss! Definitely not trying to lose any more hair, haha

Welcome! Congrats on figuring out what you want - it’s a very worthwhile journey. I was in a similar situation to you, and though it’s a little tougher starting in your 30s, it’s definitely doable. Honestly, the best advice I can give is dive into the sidebar and wiki resources. They are a fantastic starting point. I’d also recommend making femininity content a regular part of your routine. Jasmyne Theodora is a YouTuber I really like! Books by Laura Doyle are also excellent, can’t recommend eno…

Oh, I just wish I could give you a big hug right now. What you’re feeling is valid and a genuine result of your life experiences to this point. It sounds like you’re experiencing a similar anger to what a lot of our young men are feeling these days - we tend to gloss over the fact that it happens to women too! The social narrative is that it’s way easier for women to “get men” than the other way around, which just makes it sting more. Disclaimer: I’m about to be a total hypocrite. When I was 18,…
