Had a guy off OLD insist I pick the restaurant. I picked a nice place that I have always wanted to try. He agreed, then canceled, claiming he was sick (pre-covid). He asked again, after recovering from his presumed illness. This time, he picked the place. It was significantly cheaper than what I had selected, but okay, it's not like it was Applebee's. The date was a disaster! He sat us in the bar, got drunk, and never suggested food, just drinks (I am not much of a drinker). I finally asked the …

The standards don't relax once we are in a relationship. Either it's HV or it's not. If a potential suitor, or long time beau, paid enough attention to what my interests are that he could plan a day around them, be they antiquing, golf, dancing, or opera, that's HV. Saying "hey, wanna go to Goodwill some time" is not. Also, that suggestion about stargazing sounds like a good way to end up on a true crime podcast; I would probably avoid that one even if I was interested in astronomy.

Yes exactly. If a man payed attention to what I enjoy, and thus knew I would love this activity, particularly when concluded with a lovely meal, it would indeed be high value. It's not the expense, it's the attention to detail, to my interests, and effort to plan it.

I take exception to thrifting being a poor date. I love thrifting. I would be thrilled to find a great guy that I could take on a thrift hunt, maybe hit a couple estate sales or an auction. We would drive around to the different shops and sales, talk up a storm, compare Playlists on the car stereo, check out each other's style in thrift acquisitions, then have a nice dinner. And if he turns out to be no fun, I would at least have found something cool at the local Savers! But I have yet to find a…

Often, an advocate can accompany you to make a delayed report. Contact the YWCA or whomever provides those services in your area. If Google can't help with finding a women's resource center, call the sex crimes or crimes against persons division at the nearest large police department and ask them. These centers also often offer therapy at no cost to survivors of sexual &/or domestic violence. Let me be very clear- even in my backward ass state, a drunk person CANNOT consent. That old "get a girl…

Match on OLD- so, you look tall in your pictures, how tall are you? Me- 5' 9" and I love my heels, too. OLD guy - oh. Well, I am 5' 6" Me- I know, it's in your profile information. Never heard from him again. I have had variations on this conversation several times & I am over it. I don't care, but they always do. And I am not trading in my stilettos & kitten heels to assuage his feels. So I guess I will look for tall men!

My ex husband told me that he used to ask women about their families to see if they had daddy issues. He sought women with daddy issues on purpose. Of course, he told me this after we were married, too late for me to run for the hills. Now, if a man asks me personal questions in a singles environment like OLD or in a bar, I obfuscate and ask them about themselves. And my legit favorite podcast is The British History Podcast. Guaranteed to weed out all but the serious history nerds. (But it is ex…

Thank you. This is solid advice and I will follow it. I miss her, but other things take precedence. I might revisit reaching out in a few years, when my kids are in college & wounds are healed. Thank you again!

I swear my ex takes a damn survey of everyone he knows before dealing with me! And they give him terrible advice. Me- you took my stimulus money out of the old joint account. Give it back. Him- (screaming in a parking lot in his boxers) You are turning into the crazy ex-wife! Everyone we know thinks you are nuts! Just ask! They say I need to be more hard ass with you! Yeah childbirth smarts a bit, and pregnancy is no walk in the park. You really do forget much of the pain, although that doesn't help much at the time. I strongly recommend a birthing center, where you can be surrounded by other women- midwives & dulas. My girls are teens now, and they have no time for LV BS, yet they have big open hearts for people (one daughter is pan) who deserve their efforts, mostly as friends as they aren't really into dating. Nor are they into any of the crap all those Af…

We would use the ASL sign for Help. Right hand as a fist on your open left palm, then lift your hands together. Kinda looks like you are asking for a beer, but meant "get me the fuck out of here!" Also, one guy who kept hitting on my drunk friend on Bourbon Street... I asked to see his ID, and the dumbass gave it to me! I refused to return it until he gave me back my tipsy friend.

My psychiatrist: we have not seen you since 2019! Are you OK? Me: I am actually great! Just wanted to discuss an AD/HD med. Dr: you aren't taking... proceeded to list various antidepressants & anti anxiety meds. Me: nope. Don't need 'em. Dr: are you in talk therapy? Me: nope. Doing great. Sleep great. No anxiety attacks, no depression. Dr: what changed? Me: I got divorced. Turns out, I didn't need a doctor, I needed a lawyer. Actual conversation. And I got my Ritalin so win-win.

Am I the only one bothered by "made from China?" Like is the tee shirt porcelain? I could see this as an artistic statement- looks beautiful, soft, & pliable, but nope, and if you try to break it, it will cut your hand. Plus, porcelain painting has long been treated as a feminine art, which Judy Chicago took to new levels... sorry, I am waiting in line (socially distant!) at a government office and the mind wanders.

Just came here to say that I love my new lock- uber pro. Got it off Amazon. Opens with a fingerprint or a code, so my ex can't copy my kids' keys. Auto locks, so no wondering if I locked the door or not. I can give a temporary code to the pet sitter if I need to. If the wifi goes down, there's a manual key I can use. I freaking love it. I had so much fun in my 30s, and my 5th decade is starting off pretty well, too. Stay out of the sun, save some money, make good friends, don't take any shit, travel, develop a fun hobby, volunteer for something important, so much to do & see. Men will come, or they won't, or they will come & not stick around, hearts will break & heal, and you will be fine regardless. It sounds trite, but it's true.

I think I am going to get kicked out of my grammar-geeks Facebook group tonight for telling a guy that referring to women as "females" carries a connotation that might cause women to think poorly of him. He didn't believe me & suggested I take a survey as I, a lone woman, couldn't possibly be correct. My ex divorced me because he "couldn't deal with" my depression anymore. I had been diagnosed with treatment resistant depression some years prior. And he told anyone who would listen about it. I actually got DMs from people I barely knew inquiring about my mental health (they all meant well). Except it turns out, I didn't need therapy & doctors. I needed a lawyer. I kept in touch with a Canadian ex who now lives in a major American city. He is very successful. He kept sending me anti-Biden memes, which I ignored. A few weeks ago he was asking me send him ideas for songs that were popular when we were in college, which I did. He didn't recognize one of the titles, so I sent him a Spotify link. My last mother's day with my ex, he ran up to Walmart day-of and got me some bags of gummy bears and handed them to me. Was confused when I was displeased. Saw a guy on Tinder... married, with a profile saying his wife won't touch him. Photo is a bathroom selfie in no shirt & with his pants half down. Weird hat on his head. Pants are old Dickies, with pubes sticking up out the top. Huge gut. Pasty pale skin. Bathroom is just drywall & tape, not finished, laundry on the floor & the toilet seat is up. We had family therapy to help my ex in his relationship with our kids. I was mostly quiet, because the issues aren't really about me. When my ex-husband & I first split up, I got him gifts and signed them from the kids. He got me nothing, and didn't help the kids get me anything for birthday, Christmas, Mother's Day. That was the end of that. Never did it again. Now the kids are older & shop on their own. They get me gifts. They get him a card. And he complains to me that it is store-bought. This so hard! Funny how the broken picture on the wall was one he gifted me, the broken dishes were gifts from my father or souvenirs of trips he wasn't on, or a door or cabinet to the house that I owned, not him. I have not had anyone off a dating app ask me for my fantasy yet... I am feeling left out! But I also don't reply to men whose open line is "heyyyy beautiful..." Right now, all my past matches have faded away & I am only talking to one. It has been a week or two & mostly we talk about food, restaurants, and regional differences in curry. Yeah. One group used to do a big skyclad Beltane in this private campground about an hour away. Very crunchy granola with Pagan trappings. All I could think of was ticks & chiggers! NO. And then friends who went started telling me stories about alcohol & drug fueled sexual improprieties and I was so glad I never went. My ex used to grow out this wretched beard-like facial hair; looked like a drowned possum with mange had died on his face. I must concur that there are enough red flags here by yardage to shame a Christos instalation. And you know this. Just chiming in to note that in the future, I might avoid telling any man I was arguing with that anything makes me feel vulnerable. That's like saying "Here's my button, please push it." We called these men "Push Me Pull Yous." The worst one I ever dated took me on a lovely date & told me how much fun we would have together that summer. "See you on Friday!" He said when he dropped me off. Evidently, he meant a Friday in September, as that was the next time I heard from him. Reiterating some others, block & delete confusing weirdos who turn a date into an emotional job interview. And yes, I have been asked the question about lying in a job interview for a job that required an extensive background check. My answer? Of course I lie. If a friend asks me if their teeth are yellow and I know they can't do anything about it, I say "you look great!" If some aggressive scrote won't leave me alone, I will lie and flatter until I am safe. If my ex-husband is getting in my bus…

My ex-husband could not buy me a gift to save his life. I would make a damn list at Christmas & he would still show up with random shit he bought at the mall the night before. I called him out once & he said he wanted to be creative and not use my list because that "wasn't him." But I would ask for things I needed (we were poor at the time) and he would get me things like cheese plates. Cheese plates? What? I mean, I love cheese, but when my shoes are worn out and I ask for shoes, buy me the fuc…

I swear they don't even read the profile anyway. And they will let you know right away regardless. Men I have matched with this week, first communications- "Hey" "Is that your real hair color?" "I love making love during a thunderstorm" (it was raining at the time) "Your feet are so sexy" "Your beautiful" Thank you for your interest, but it's a no from me. Next. Not gonna disrupt my day or put on makeup for such low effort.

Yeah it's like they take a poll amongst their cronies! I don't talk to my friends about him except to laugh because I just don't think about him much. He gets no free-rent space in my head, but evidently pondering my evil ways (like making him actually abide by the decree) is a hobby for him & his cohort! Poor sad little men.

Do we have the same ex-husband? Mine sent the most heinous texts after I threatened to take him back to court as he owed me a small amount of money & some important paperwork. Evidently, I am mean & crazy & he should have left me ages before he did because aaaaall his friends told him to, & his friends were telling him to be more mean to me but he was being nice instead, blah blah blah... I told him to talk to my lawyer. Sent screenshots to my friends. We laughed at him. He. Can't. Hurt. Me. Any…

Dude using the word "females"- thanks, now we know who not to date. Nothing dries out a vagina like a guy saying "females." Seriously. My crotch is now as arid and sandy as the Mohave. Might grow a cactus. Know several women in law enforcement. Wanna up that speeding ticket? Hit on the cop. Mention her butt & she adds illegal lane usage. Tell her her vest must be crushing her boobs? OK, speeding, lane usage, oh look, your plate has a cover! Those are illegal here. Keep it up buddy, she's got all…

Worked for a construction business, in a trailer, often alone. New office machine was delivered by a sales representative. He hooked it up, and starts chatting with me. I was polite, but I had work to do & was not interested in him & his evident poor dental hygiene. He left eventually. But he returned. And called. I started locking the door. The carpenters started eating lunch where they could see if any cars pulled up. Still he called. I finally called his employer & said, "hey, love the thing …

Note to self. Do not reproduce with a man who cannot correctly use apostrophes or "you're." Dude might be in for a rude awakening. The (US) state I live in decides the minimum child support and will collect it if you wish. The court can order more, or the non-custodial parent can offer more, in addition to that minimum. Hope she's got a good lawyer.

My ex cried at chick flicks. He also screamed and broke stuff when upset. To his credit, he's in therapy now as his inability to control his emotions was impacting his relationship with our children. I had to take him to court over some shenanigans & he got so angry, he sent me hateful texts, blocked me on social media, and changed the password so I couldn't use the family streaming service. Old me would have been hurt, or argued his points about how I suck at everything. New me was just confuse…

High school. Went to the movies with a group of friends. The ex of one of my friends decided I was his date & kept trying to make out with me. During the movie. A movie about genocide under Pol Pot. What about The Killing Fields says kissing would be welcomed? Of course, this is the same dude who slept in my friend's front yard after she dumped him, until her dad finally turned the hose on him & called the cops.

I find the path of the Fool in the tarot very helpful, reminding me that the fool isn't an idiot, the fool is simply inexperienced and naive & must travel through the path of the archetypes/major arcana to become what she is meant to be. It helps me forgive my younger self for mistakes, reframes them as learning opportunities, and keeps me moving forward.

She needs a good lawyer, as she can still get maintenance (assuming there's an income discrepancy), at least where I live, for several years. My first boyfriend in college had a motorcycle. I loved riding with him, felt like riding a horse, but faster & unlike a horse, it didn't spook at stupid stuff. He was initially annoyed, however, that I didn't clutch on to him like his previous girlfriends had. Well, I grew up on a horse. My balance was excellent & grabbing the saddle horn was for amateurs, why would I grab onto him? He decided that was cool with him & we went on many lovely rides in the country. Women actually had more rights during the Colonial period than they did in the later 19th century. And during that early era, there was a ritual called "bundling" where a suitor would spend the night in bed with the object of his affection, but with a bundling board stuck between them. No premarital spooning in early US history! Courting, of course, was an upper class activity. No one was taking the Irish immigrant laundress out for an afternoon carriage ride, nor did a woman whose parents had b…

One of the things I was trained to look for was use of the word "Daddy." Does the girl/woman refer to a man as Daddy or have "Daddy" tattooed on her? When taken in combination with other clues, it can indicate trafficking.

Ursula didn't go to Ariel, Ariel went to Ursula. Ariel chooses to sacrifice everything she knows and loves- her family, her voice, her species- to chase after a man she doesn't actually know. And, thanks to Disney magic, everything is just fine at the end. Girls raised on that BS- change everything you are and he will love you- become the ultimate Pickmeshas. The Little Mermaid is the WORST. Sure, give up your freaking VOICE for a dude you have never even properly met??? I studied a lot of fairy tales in their original form in college. They were never exactly intended as children's literature, more as folk tales to perpetuate what society wanted from its members- children should be obedient, women perform certain roles & men others, monarchy is good, the woods are scary and bad, generosity and kindness are rewarded, the evil should be punished, marri…

My ex would grab my ass all the time just to see me jump, often in front of other people. He did it once while we were putting up a large Christmas tree at my father's house & I was on a ladder. Except it wasn't me. He had grabbed my stepmother's ass instead by accident. She nearly fell off the ladder & Dad was not amused. He never did it (to anyone) again.

Why does this guy get to live rent-free in your head? Time to evict him. He gets no real estate in your brain. I get it, I poured over every social media post my ex made for a long time, just rolling in the burning pain it caused me. Then I stopped. The pain had burned away my feelings about him. I had no fucks left to give. I don't wish him ill at all, I don't wish him anything at all. He is gone from my mind (except when we are obligated to co-parent). It's so liberating. I don't know what US city or state you are in, but where I am, the YWCA (a non-profit) offers FREE assistance to victims of sexual assault including therapy, working with police, and working with medical professionals if needed. Also, if you are a college student, contact the Title IX [9] officer at your school. All colleges are required to have such an officer if they receive federal funds. That person handles (or is supposed to handle) any complaints of sexual harassment or assault. Finally, i…

Companies like ShutterStock produce professional photos of random things & people (with paid models) and then sell them to people who need them. Making a website for your dental practice? ShutterStock will sell you pics of smiling people and dentists. Need to decorate your office with pictures of people using a product? ShutterStock probably already has them available. They are readily available on-line & fairly cheap.

My ex-husband is being dreadful (you should see the hateful texts!) because I am threatening to take him back to court because he violated our decree. All I want is a bunch of paperwork for a vehicle, but he can't be bothered to produce it, so court is the logical next step. It's like he can't understand cause and effect. I used to volunteer with an organization that helped people who had been victims of sexual & domestic violence. In one of our training sessions, a DV detective told a story about a woman being stalked by her ex. The police garage damn near took her car apart looking for a tracking device they suspected he installed. Found it in the heat vent. Scary shit & very real. Poor woman, I hope he leaves her alone now.
