The qintessential scene that established Ripley as a part of the group was during the loadout of the dropship. When she approached Apone and said, "I feel like a fifth wheel around here, is there anything I can do?"

Apone responded with "I don't know.Is there anything you can do?"

This simple exchange showed that her inclusion or exclusion from the group was based solely upon her ability to contribute positively to it. Prior to this scene, she was tolerated but not accepted. After this scene, when she showed that she was a team player she was universally accepted. Further to this, her "rise to power" as a leader was also solely predicated upon her actions. She never demanded acceptance or respect. She earned it through action.

More summary than analysis, and Ellen Ripley seems to have plenty of feminist cred according to a quick Google search. The issue is that female characters or any character has to take on "masculine" qualities to be respected or that respected qualities are coded "masculine."

the problem here is that the female characters can be described in contrasting ways.

we can look at the characters as being good because they are strong women
we can look at the characters as bad because they are masculine females

the feminist approach is flawed in such manner. Ripley is a poor female role model because she does not represent the modern female, and is instead represented as a primarily masculine figure with masculine appearance. She is a good female role model because she has a conventionally masculine role within the film, but also breasts and a vagina.

The fact that feminists cant agree on how these characters represent positive or negative gender roles shows an underlying flaw within feminism.
