Jimmy Carter: 4x more girls killed than men in wwII

On a recent Real Time w/ Bill Mahr, former president Jimmy Carter said:

Well, there were about 40 million people killed in the Second World War, the most devastating war in history. There have been four times that many girls killed by their own parents when they were either born, they were strangled because they were girls and not boys, or they now find through sonograms that the fetus is female and they abort it so it won't be born as a girl.

My question is how could he be so sure and did he count the number of boys aborted combined with the number of males killed in wars in the 20th century? Seems like a far fetched claim over all. Also, equating a fetus with a fully developed humanbeing.

Does the "sex" of the fetus really matter?

Because men are of more utility than women. So what? Are we supposed to be sad that crippled slaves are worth less than abled bodied ones?

If we're going to measure combined deaths over long periods of time and not single events, let's consider that hundreds of millions of deaths have been due to war, over 99% of which are men.

Or maybe ask how many boys were aborted or not adopted. By combining killing after birth and before and not recognizing the economic hazard in more impoverished times, such reasoning is based on thinking killing one girl is wrong even of it helped prevent the rest of their family, both male and female, from starving. Tis a complex ethical issue that Carter paints with a broad brush where it is convenient for his position and a narrow brush when it is convenient.
