I've read about this story in the past and it seems to me that it is a little pathetic that many movies show women as being only interested in talking to one another about men. They're often little more than objects of sex or romance, rather than powerful characters in their own right, and that is a problem.

But this is not the only inequality in cinema. Why don't we have a grade that's based on the ratio of male to female deaths, the brutality of these deaths, and how they're portrayed? Because it seems to me that in most movies, for each woman who dies, a boatload of men do, and the woman's death is portrayed as a greater tragedy.

This is true even for non-Western movies. Take Taegukgi, for example. It's a war movie, and there are probably hundreds and hundreds of violent male deaths shown on screen. The protagonists massacre North Koreans without really flinching, but at one point in the movie, a woman dies, and this death is portrayed in slow motion, from the point the bullet hits her to the point when she finally, sadly, hits the ground.

If male and female characters should be equally strong, surely it's only fair that they be killed as often and in equally brutal manners.
