There are two outcomes. (Edit: When you call someone a misandrist)

They laugh at you and pull up some slogan like "Misandry don't realz" - ultimately they just ignore what you're saying and use the allegation of misandry as an excuse to ignore your arguments and cement their perception that you are incorrect in their minds. (a.k.a they end up thinking they're right, further pushing them in the wrong direction) Ad hominem, etc.
They care about your allegation and get defensive - when someone gets defensive it basically means they're going to stop listening to reason as they are going to do anything to find a foothold to demonstrate that your allegation of misandry was incorrect - generally cementing the idea that you're incorrect in their minds. ("They're wrong about me being a misandrist, so they must be wrong about everything!"). Again, pushing them in the wrong direction.

Number 2 is actually a subconcious psychological phenomenon (I'll try to find the paper) which I characterised for fun. People don't actually cement themselves defensively on purpose for the most part.

But yeah there's a reason why when you put someone on the defensive, they are less likely to change their position. I think an interesting idea that was thrown about was the idea of (in a confrontational setting) feelings of persecution + guilt = stubbornness.

So pretty much don't bother with accusation - if the person seems open-minded just try to be as understanding as possible. Even if they don't get it, leave them be and see if you can come back around to them later when the topic comes up again.

What do you mean by "works much better"?

I think that if you call someone misandric, you might have several possible goals:

highlight that some people are sexist against men
hurt the person's feelings
make the person look bad in front of others
convince them to change their opinion on this one issue
convince them to change their anti-male opinions on many issues

I could see some of the goals being achieved better with misanthropy. But some would not be.
