They had someone on who was talking about a case where a girl has accused a security guard of rape, but she was too drunk at the time of the alleged incident to remember anything that happened. The case was thrown out.

According to the moron they had speaking, this was somehow a problem, that she wasn't believed, even though there was no evidence, and even she couldn't say for sure what occurred.

It's almost as if 'culture of disbelief' roughly translates into 'the right to a fair trial and assumption of innocence until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt'...

No shit a substantial amount gets written off quickly. It's become normal for women to lie about rape.

Taking women's word for it would be giving liars a blank check. Evidence or GTFO.

The figures show that the "no crime" rate for adult rape – the rate at which forces dismiss allegations initially recorded as a crime because of later details that emerge about the case – varies from only 3% in Cumbria to 33% in Lincolnshire.

That sounds very different from what the headline suggests.

You know, I do think this is a little shocking, statistics-wise. I think all allegations deserve non-intrusive investigation, rather than simply being tossed aside as it appears is the case now(?). The investigation of rape, however, is incredibly hard to put it mildly.

But I do somewhat get it. If someone were raped by a masked unacquainted person, there's little if anything the police can do, and it's unreasonable to expect the perpetrator to be caught and brought to court. It's just a very shitty situation where the best thing to do is to provide aid for the victim, rather than trying to force justice upon a person who cannot be reliably found and identified.

But to my knowledge, most rapes involve acquainted ones, so the above is unlikely to account for the 20% unhandled cases mentioned in the article. Even so, without intruding upon the alleged perpetrator's sovereignty, there's little the police can do other than maybe interviewing and maybe getting a DNA sample if the police have anything to match it against. The nature of the crime makes it very hard to detect, which sucks for all victims, but that's about it. Anybody can get away with rape if the crime is pulled off well and the system treats the alleged rapist fairly. This doesn't mean that the system is flawed per se, but it means that the crime is rather unfortunate.
