It seems to me that these boys who develop an unhealthy obsessions with guns and weapons use it as a way to simultainiously gain power, and not seem weak. I have not done a bunch of research, but

it seems the boys generally exhibit anti-social behaviors, as well as show symptoms of depression, anxiety, or ADHD.

The start of a fantasy of mass murder can likely be based on the fantasy of ultimate power. Can you imagine a power greater than holding the lives of many people in your hands? In this fantasy, you

choose who lives, and who dies. People do what you tell them, out of fear.

The other thing that this fantasy garners is the appearence of "not feeling weak." I can see how these boys would feel a lack of strength, considering all the ideals held by our society. Our society holds

strength up to specific standards. I like to think of these as stereotypes.

We have the "Cowboy:" A man who is independant, does not need any part of society to live. He holds the law up to his own standard, and when he feels wronged, he seeks vengeance as a form of

justice. He always gets the girl.

We have the "CEO:" A rich man. He lives his life with people under him, and makes snap desicions that determine the lives of those people. He can control his lackeys with his booming voice, and always

gets the girl.

Then we have the most attributed hero of all time: the "Hero of War:" Generals, Commanders, and leaders of men. From Napoleon to General Sherman, from Rambo to John Connor, hese men fight for their

country. These men kill for thier country. They command others to kill for their country. They are surrounded by death, and come out of it with a straight face. They are hurt but never show it. They do their

duty, and then go home to their waiting wives and girlfreinds (They always get the girl.)

There's more, but they all seem to follow a common theme. They always get the girl. This means that to these teen boys, if they are not "getting the girl," or taking lives, they are considered weak. They are

considered immasculine. So these boys grab whatever they can to either seem like they are willing to takes lives, or are able to get the girl. Then they will be on par with the heroes, the men among men, the strong.

I think blame can be placed on the deliberate feminization of boys and the lack of father figures in the increasingly common fatherless homes.

There now exists several generations of men raised to be soft, gentle, and unmanly. Many have discovered that most women don't find that attractive. Some of the less stable ones decide to take that out on society.
