Am I missing something? I don't see that in the piece.

Is there a real issue here? Will Seattlites not be able to see art made by men? Is it a permanent display? Is the women's art not up to snuff? Will contemporary artists in Seattle somehow be discriminated against?

This is a non issue. First, the quote you put in the title isn't in the piece. Second, this isn't a permanent thing, it's a seasonal showing of feminist art...

Stop being outraged over themed art exhibits that last a couple of months, and worry about stuff that matters, like divorce reform.

But institutional change is overdue. It would be tragic to give life to these questions in the galleries for three months, then kill them behind the scenes.

In context, that's not nearly as offensive. It sounds like she's just saying that having a museum take artist identity into account for art exhibits is a good thing. Whether or not it is can be debated, but she did not say that "giving men the boot" was "overdue."

If the title of this thread were accurate, I'd be filled with disappointment - SAM is great, I lived in Seattle for years. But the title isn't accurate. This is going to be a seasonal exhibit, and then it will be gone. SAM does this. Also, I did not see the quote in the title appear in the article. Where is it actually from?

As others have said this is a non issue as its only for the fall showing, ie not permanent. Art museums often do these sort of things. I mean this is no different from say showing art only from blacks or asians or what have you.

This disease is spreading. I went to Asian Art museum here in Seattle. My 2nd time there. The first time there I loved it. Lots of art from India and China.

This time? Several rooms, which used to have some of the best art, were replaced by "women's art". I have nothing against women's art as long as it's good art. This wasn't. Room after room there were monotonous pictures in a simplistic and bizarre style. It didn't evoke that "this is good art" sense. Disappointed.

Isn't that a bit like an opera house saying they'll only be showing works by female composers? Granted, it's modern art but even today the best artists are still men.
