I'd call it a tax cause its not going straight to the child to support him/her, its going to the mother to support HER. So its 100% just another tax.

The idea of child support is fine. If children to go a primary caregiver then the burden should be on both parents to support the children. There's a few issues with the current system, though:

Women are much more likely to be given primary custody of children in a divorce. NOW fought against starting the bar at equal custody because it obviously benefits women to keep them at the default caregiving status.
Child support doesn't go directly to the child. It goes to the pockets of the primary caregiver (taxfree) to be used as he or she pleases. It's unaccountable and there's no guarentee this money is going to the children.
The amount of child support is not tied to actually how much to support a child. It's usually far more and is not very likely to go down should the supporter lose their job.
While child support is ruthlessly enforced, visitation rights for the supporter is not.
Sometimes child support has been forced on "the nearest available male." Sometimes by clerical error (similar name, etc). This is due to government incentive to get another woman/child off the books of state/federal support as well as justify the bloated family courts power over people's lives. Should the man contest this, the courts basically say "tough shit." There are also cases of the father being raped by the mother and the father still gets hit with child support.

In short, NOW fought against equal custody because women all over would lose this gravy train (without having to fight for it as hard as the man does).

What I always thought was interesting was this; if you stay in the home, as opposed to becoming a divorced dad, you can spend you money on whatever the fuck you want as long as the basic needs of the child are being met. Get divorced, and now the kid is entitled to shit beyond your wildest dreams. How come it can go beyond basic needs once you move out?
