As a sufferer with a chronic kidney disease, I'd just like to say, GOOD FUCKING LUCK WITH THAT!

Most CKD sufferers don't even have a diagnosis, which is why the catch-all acronym is used. But the funding and interest in it is almost zero and the field has barely moved an inch since I was diagnosed almost forty years ago.

Governments and scientists have far more important and serious illnesses to deal with and throw money at. Here in the UK, almost 0.0009% of all women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year while just tens of thousands of times that number (about 9% of the population) live with the symptoms of CKD.

So it's not difficult to see why so much money needs to go to combating the terrible scourge of breast cancer while CKD sufferers can look forward to a life of pain and disability before dying quietly without inconveniencing anyone.

I already linked this story - but it's interesting to see another paper's take on it. It's remarkable how the Guardian has managed to minimize the gender of the victims.
