That's a fair point IMO, not sure why you were downvoted for that. The problem is, 'victim' is arguably a rather 'loaded' word in itself. I find it difficult to explain why I think that, it's a subtle thing, but the best way I can describe it is to say it's something to do with making a break from the past, and recognising that the previous circumstances of powerlessness and vulnerability no longer apply. If you consider the difference between the phrases "I was a victim..." / "I am a former victim..." and "I am a victim...", you might get a sense of what I mean. It's a moot point though, I admit.

Ideally there should be a more emotionally neutral word along the lines of 'abusee' or something.

[Edit: curiously, the original meaning of the word seems to be "a person or animal sacrificed or regarded as sacrificed", which is kind of interesting in itself]
