Thank you for posting this, I wish I could upvote you higher. I know this isn't r/atheism, but that's not terribly relevant to me.

I was (mostly) raised in a somewhat isolationist church that would rather arrogantly say that their way was the only right way, they were the true believers, and dissent meant 'discipling' or excommunication yet prided themselves on being 'non-denominational' and 'open to all.' Man, if you were merely 'dating' a girl and you did more than hold her hand or give a brief hug were you ever looked down upon. During my programming years I remember hearing them explain why the rules of pork and mixed fabrics were irrelevant now and superceded by society, yet the rules of sexual decency, forbidden homosexuality, and being yoked with unbelievers were undeniable. That was the day that I learned about the differences in Judeo-Christian religions.

It wasn't long after that I came to the realization that if all of them believed their way to be the truth, and the differences between them were merely what portions of the book upon which they all were based went ignored or emphasized, that they are either all bullshit or we're all fucked. Quite simply, they couldn't all be right because they contradict each other, and there was no logical way any "benevolent God" would fuck the majority of the world's lifetime population out of an opportunity at "heaven" based solely on where they were born.

It was. My gender came up multiple times during the discussion. This may have been a particularly incompetent guidance councilor and not indicative of the whole, but the attitude is prevalent.

For the same work, no they don't; not in any appreciable amount anyways.

You're correct. My point is that as long as women believe the guy will make more, they will not prioritize their own income. It doesn't help that there's a degree of pressure on women to "marry up."

I'm not disagreeing with the video, I'm just commenting on the less obvious factors that push women away from pursuing high paying options, factors which cannot be fixed by a law saying, "pay women more!" but can be addressed by telling girls that they don't actually need to marry a rich man to prove their own worth.

No surprise there. Modern western civilization gives women an easier out. If you're going to get ostracized from your family for going to school, you're going to pick something that lets you survive.

Imagine if students of any gender were told "go this route and you're on your own." I doubt you'd see as many chasing down degrees with a low ROI. Instead we have a society of easy credit and an expectation that everyone will get a degree in something.

My issue is that the education system actually encourages women (and ethic minorities) to be less ambitious in the first place, thanks to applied expectations. It's the flipside of the same cultural bias that presumes a man should be the one who pays on a first date and who gets taken to the cleaners when a relationship breaks down. There are cracks forming in this bias, but its not broken yet.

How cute, you faced supposed "discrimination" because of your gender [with no evidence of such.] Show me data, and don't just say "waaaa my counselor hurt me." Girls lead in all categories from primary school, high school gradates, college enrolles/graduates, Master's degrees, and PhD's besides STEM. No one is holding them back; and there is more money spent to increase them every year.

For fucks sake, the Brits recently found out boys were lagging [after how many decades?] and declined to increase any spending on bringing them up!

Here is clear evidence that boys are discriminated: Study shows that female teachers consistently mark boys lower than girls, and the boys pick up on it and don't try as hard.

Study showing boys perform better than girls under traditional methods, you know, the kind not taught anymore in primary school.

The studies you link don't run contrary to my experience. However, phonetics is not mathematics. It's also not nearly as subjectively marked.

Meanwhile, if you look at math in particular, girls have barely caught up to overall tests in 2008, and there remains a widespread cultural bias that math and science are not girl sciences.

Edit: Link went down like the moment I posted, how annoying, here's a summary mirror.

These are not mutually exclusive. Sex stereotyping says that girls are the better communicators with better verbal skills, and boys are the math geeks. This punishes those who play against stereotypes, especially given how much support (or lack thereof) can shape growth.

I'm not dismissing the way that education is failing boys. It is. But it is failing boys differently than its failing girls. The end result leads to different life choices which have a profound effect on the overall makeup of the workforce.

If you can see past your innate hostility for a moment, you might realize I'm not actually working against your interests.

Wow, I hadn't seen that before. What is really interesting is that his response was downright misogynistic. It's offensive enough to say men should just stop being pussies and deal with it, but his reasoning behind it seems to say that women are like whiny children and that it's just easier to give them what they want. That is a fucked up perspective all the way around. Incredible that Adams didn't take more shit for that comment. No wonder he deleted it.

The reality is that women are treated differently by society for exactly the same reason that children and the mentally handicapped are treated differently. It's just easier this way for everyone.

I can't believe he actually said this shit. Unbelievable, this guy. I can't tell if he's serious or this is some world class trolling, though I'm leaning toward the latter.
