How did the dog earn the title of man's best friend and not the woman?

For a technical, literal answer, I believe the saying refers to "a human" rather than specifically men. And the saying itself comes from that a dog is always loyal, never judgemental, will follow you everywhere, and generally pretty fluffy and adorable. Nobody's friends with hairy humans.

But for a more figurative perception: I hate this topic because it's going to be more "Women suck" comments.

Man is in reference to the human race, not specifically only men. This means that a dog is also woman's best friend too.

Just for the record, I like women and get on well with them, and am a regular contributor to this subreddit.

Because a dog represents all the positives of a relationship with a women (other than sex) without the downsides of a relationship with a woman.

They are loyal, dependable, caring, hard-working (depending on breed), and will always be there for you.

They are not self-centered, nagging, or money-grubbing.
