Yeah, I think it probably has a lot to do with marriage being less binding and us putting less pressure on people to marry/stay married to people they hate. Divorce rates have skyrocketed since the 1970's, people are less likely to marry, and when they do marry, it's generally later in life.

This is for England and Wales, but it tells the same basic story:

...more divorces and fewer marriages with major change starting in the 1970's.

Well Erin Pizzey always used to report that about two thirds of the women coming to DV shelters are abusers of their husbands. I suspect what happened is that these women who would otherwise have killed their husband instead got themselves to a DV shelter as a "victim" for the ego stroking and as fucked up as the environment in those places must be, it was better than them staying at home and getting more and more violent.

Apparently kindness and sympathy is a better treatment for abusers than what the feminists force on men and the male victims of their abusers, the so-called anger management courses and so on, which tend to blame and humiliate.

Most intimate partner violence is mutual. As such, the violent women went to a shelter and got away from an equally violant man, most likely.

IMO the availability of DV shelters probably has nothing to do with the drop b/c according to Pizzey women in the shelters only learn how to be more violent there. As such, it wouldn't make sense that they would be less willing to kill a spouse after going to a shelter. I think it has more to do with No-fault divorce, women are more independent now and can leave violent relationships. There was a study that indicated that since the advent of No-fault divorce suicide rates for women dropped dramatically which suggests a big change in the behavior of women due to a perception of have more freedom and being able to leave a relationship.

They're going to the shelter instead of killing their husband.

That study seems to be bullshit. All it noted was that suicide rates for women decreased by a little (like 8% maybe 16%) over a period of decades. That could be because of a thousand different reasons having nothing to do with no-fault divorce. Stupid economists. (yes it wasn't a paper by an actual social scientist).

Quite the irony isn't it? Mandatory arrest laws are protecting men from their abusive wives by locking them up.

Why do you murder a partner? To get rid of them, to hurt them, to cause them anguish...

What if the state will do it for you with almost zero chance of repercussion to you?

Some unintended consequences are rather interesting.
