I ask because I seriously wonder due to various factors:

  • K-12 teachers are disproportionately female, and may not know how to communicate with and teach young men as well as male teachers might. I'm not saying we need more than 50% of teachers to be male, but a balance would be nice.

  • There are many programs that insist on advancing women in various fields.

  • Men (at least where I grew up) were curbed more toward the military. Not to say that you can't get ahead by going through the military, but a lot of guys I knew who went military didn't go on to use their service to get an education after.

  • Most people in general didn't have access to higher education before - not just women. This includes people of all races and ethnic backgrounds from white to black. I mean, of course women didn't, but that's because a) they weren't socially pressured to go, and b) there wasn't any real necessity for them to get one because there was social pressure on men to get educated so they could better provide for their families. Access was more difficult because of staggering costs more so than anything else, IMHO.

Why is this an issue? Because we're leaving half of our population behind. Half of the population that is so intensely needed for this country's recovery is being left in the dust because of over-exaggeration in the education system's unfairness. We are also ruining various industries because we don't have the proper diverse staffing for them. Example: women now vastly outnumber men in the field of veterinary medicine, yet there is a huge lack of doctors for livestock and other large animals. Why? Because everyone who goes now only wants to work with dogs and cats.

In addition, it flies in the face of cultural expectations that women seek to maintain, like men paying the bills, for dates, for alimony, etc. If you're suppressing men into the role of being your worker bee, why should he be denied the opportunity to provide properly? Because you need to feel empowered?

Look, I think it's important for women to be educated. I also know, however, that it's because they're people, not because they're women.
