The problem here is the whole "rape by deception" concept. He never raped her as we understand rape, he simply decided, after much pressure by his family, that he couldn't marry her, and left the relationship.

Now I understand that in India's social climate, expectation of virginity and marriage makes this a tough call on women. But shunting off a man to prison for the fucked-up expectations of society isn't a solution to this problem. The solution would be either to teach people to stop expecting women to conform to this "virgin bride" ideal, or to hold both women and men as equally responsible for not conforming to tradition.

But what happens here is society putting all the responsibility on men for having sex, and none on women. If she held to tradition, then the woman should have refrained from having sex before marriage. But if she didn't, then how hypocritical is it to defy tradition, and then put the whole responsibility on the man for not conforming to it afterwards, and calling the white knights to her rescue with cries of "rape" once she doesn't get what she wanted?
