"Grass-Eating Men"

Ah, the use of vegetarianism as an insult to 'masculinity' (on the part of those accusing these men of being 'grass eaters'). I wrote a whole editorial on that once, actually, when I was being shamed for it. Is there something wrong with eating a plant-rich diet? It's very healthy, and environmentally responsible as well (consider the extra farmland, fertilizer, pesticide, water pollution, CAFO air pollution, etc devoted to growing feed for cattle- it would preserve habitat and use less resources to eat a lower-meat diet).

Anyway, good on these Japanese men. Good for them if they want to enjoy the beauty of nature, take up gardening, and read books. My father did all of these things as I grew up. He never drank, threw his money around like a status symbol, or sexually harassed secretaries, and I respected him for it. A man who doesn't need to prove his status is a healthy, confident man. I would mourn nothing, if this so-called 'grass eating' model continued. People should be less concerned about this, and more concerned about the real problems mentioned in the article- the lack of job security, and the increasing isolation and alienation of children in an aging society.

60 percent of men in their early 20s and at least 42 percent of men aged 23 to 34 consider themselves grass-eating men. Partner Agent, a Japanese dating agency, found in a survey that 61 percent of unmarried men in their 30s identified themselves as herbivores. Of the 1,000 single men in their 20s and 30s polled by Lifenet, a Japanese life-insurance company, 75 percent described themselves as grass-eating men.
