The common opinion is that having a child automatically equips a person with the knowledge and ability to care for that child. This of course is false.

By this flawed premise, the mother spends the most time with the child and how could anyone else care for him more?

I find it funny in a way in the UK animals have better rights than children, If this were to happend to a dog it would be removed from them and they could face a sentence but if it's a child they just get called a bad paerent.

This shows that all the talk about best interest of the child is BS.

It is in the best interest of the child to be cared in ways so he will live past 50 years of age.

But best interest of the child always means "best interest of mom". This is why this totally is a men's rights issue.

7 lbs weight gain in 3 weeks? that is 100 lbs in 30 weeks. Pretty impressive. Have you, as a big healthy adult ever tried to lose 7 lbs in 3 weeks? this is a lot of weight

I just have to say, this doesn't look like a men's rights issue. This isn't the mother automatically gaining custody of the child from the father, and this isn't denying rights to the child because of his gender. We can definitely debate over whether or not this is bad for the child, whether he should remain with his uncle or not, or whether or not the system worked in this situation, but it's not about gender inequality. The boy would have just as easily been readmitted to his home if it was the father who petitioned, and not the mother, and there is no indication from the article that this is otherwise.

As for whether or not the mother should have regained custody, remember, over feeding your children, however bad for them, is probably not "willful" child abuse. There is no indication that the mother had intention of hurting the child. Granted, that doesn't make her parent of the year, not doing anything about what should have been a clear sign of an obese child, but she isn't beating or neglecting him. Most certainly not neglecting him. Hopefully she will learn to moderate her son's intake, (although it doesn't look like she has yet based on his weight gain) but even then, we have to ask ourselves if we should as a society begin to remove children from their homes (as the article said, psychologically scarring) because their upbringing isn't as healthy as we would want as a society.

And again, it's not a men's rights issue.

i can see how this story seems like the court just gave the child to the mother because courts favor women, but i would say it has much more to do with the way child services works. the goal of child services is to reunite the family. 7 pounds in three weeks does not mean she is not holding up his diet what so ever. CPS is trying their hardest to keep the family together. and if it was a single father family and the child went to the aunt the results would be the same.
