I think you need to appeal to two sides in this situation. On the one hand, yes you do have feminists who are so anti-men that they refuse to recognize the existence of male domestic violence victims.

On the other hand, one of the biggest reasons that male domestic violence victims are treated with disdain/not recognized is because of the machismo-perpetuated idea that men are too strong/whatever to be attacked by weak little women.

What you really need is a mass appeal to the general public, and some kind of campaign for victims to gain recognition and aid. Unfortunately, many male DV victims feel pressured by how they imagine their peers will react. It's difficult to say "I am a man and I am vulnerable too," or even to imply it, and that's wrong--and dangerous.

We had this type of shelter in Turkey. But it closed the doors for same reason.

I don't mean for this to come off as insensitive, but what services do these kinds of shelters provide? Are they just a location where DV victims can go where their SO cannot find them?

I'd like to see more information about this shelter. It claims to have helped over 30 people in two years. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, lets say 39 people. And it only says he helped them, does that include anyone who he counseled for a few hours? People who just wanted a recommendation for a decent lawyer? Or only people who stayed the night? How long did the average person stay? How many beds does he have? What kind of services does he provide? Is he qualified to provide them? I don't know the guy, but he comes across more like a legal activist than a counselor. does he actually know anything about how to counsel a male victim of abuse? I think male abuse victims need help, but I don't think that automatically qualifies me to service them.

Even granted him 39 people, he is helping less than 2 new people a month. He claims to have no waiting list. While he is funding the whole thing himself, he doesn't suggest he has turned anyone away due to lack of funding or that if he had more funding he could be serving more people.

What services is he currently providing? How much money is he asking for? What does he plan to do with the money? Why does he think his current response has been small? What does he plan to do about it?

Those are the kind of questions I would want answered before I put my weight behind him. As the first publicly funded dedicated male abuse shelter in Calgary his shelter would be in the spotlight. If it fails, it will be treated as indicative that Calgary doesn't need one.
