My husband and I are in such a daze over this. I am not certain what to. We haven't told the child yet or spoke to her mother. The child (lets just call her Summer) has been living with us since June 2011 in the mean time, since there has been a court order since Summer was a baby, her mother has been collection thousands of dollars in child support and refusing to return it, we are in the process of trying to get it reversed but it will take another 6 months to do so as we are not able to afford a lawyer. Meanwhile Summers mom has gone months at a time with out calling her having her phone shut off several times she has had 3 phone numbers in the 9 months Summer has been here. She didn't even call her on a birthday, she just sent a text saying to tell her Happy Birthday. That brings me to my next paragraph.
She is 14 and intellectually disabled, she functions academically at a kindergarten level and has the maturity of a 7 year old. She can't really read and she has to use an abacus to add 3+1. She would probably be at a second grade level if she didn't have such a deadbeat mom refusing to meet her needs. She wouldn't send her to the proper schools because it would inconvenience her. Along with the fact last school year with her mom she was late for school over 30 times and absent about 15 times.
With all that said Summer loves her mom she has the innocence of a young child. No matter how nice we are to her and how much love and the care we show her she would be counting the days til she sees her mom again is only she could count that high. She has a brother in the state her mom lives in that she is very attached to, she also has a sister there to that is estranged from her mom because of how neglectful she was.
Summer was also 5'2 and 200 lbs when she got here she has lost 50 lbs since she has been here. She has progressed a lot with her education since she got here. She has told me I am 'the best person she has ever had in her life' . But as I stated she still wants to go back home. I also think she has the right to know her real father and that family.
In her home state they just passed a law last year for cases of false paternity. My husband would have to give up his parental rights but could still have court ordered visitation. He has to file for this within a year of knowing he isn't the biological father. A part of me is like fuck that she is better here but she really misses her mom, she has a right to know her real dad and the thing with her mental disability my husband could be forced to pay child support for the rest of his life and Summers mom is so selfish I know she not use that money for summers well being.
Sorry if this is long winded full of bad grammar and typos. I really can't think straight over this stuff I love Summer with all my heart and she has been in my life for 7 years. This shit hurts. What the hell should we do?
tl;dr Found out my husbands daughter isn't his biological child and her mother is a horrible mother that my step daughter still wants to go back living with.
