Since most marriages were arranged by parents or for economic/political reasons, I don't think that's a good argument. Plus I've heard as much against the claim 12-13 wast the norm as against it ("common knowledge" tends to...)

Also, the existence of a libido or the knowledge that sex is pleasurable doesn't mean you should be having sex.

The reason we don't let 12 year olds have sex with 30 year olds isn't because sex will kill them, it's because a 12 year old has next to no power in a relationship (for example, 30 year old can end it when they like. 12 year old can only end it with threats or forcible non-consent; many consider this an abusive relationship in and of itself) and is something like 1.6x as likely for depression and whatnot. It's a high potential for harm, not a guarantee they'll die instantly. You can't predict the effects, so it's avoided.

An analogy; historically we had 5 year olds out toiling on their parents' farms and not having an education. I'm not saying we should go back to those days, but it does indicate that biologically speaking, people want to labour at this age.
