I had a hilarious encounter on reddit with people who cannot comprehend that sexual assault statistics are not rape statistics.

Telling them that 1 in X women were sexually assaulted, not raped, according to random study, was the same thing as telling rape victims they weren't raped.

The ignorance is astounding, and I question attacking articles that characterize a statistical sexual assault study as being an exclusively rape focused study, as actually being a sexual assault study. They still think that sexual assault is rape, not that rape is one of many forms classified as sexual assault.

Have people been so thoroughly brainwashed that there is now no label that identifies sexual assault victims without misleading people into thinking the common 1 in X figures are specific with regards to rape victims?

I sometimes feel like I will have to resign myself to the fact that people are willfully ignorant, blissfully so.
