What your proposing the the default system in a matriarchal society, where men have little or no investment in their children. The men in such societies lead a rather easy life, hunting, fishing, playing games, drinking etc. They normally only work about 10-15 hours a week since they only need to support themselves.

On the other hand women in matriarchal societies are required to almost double their workload. Since men won't work to support children they have no investment in, women are forced to support both themselves and their children single handed, and leads to an inevitable drop in living standards for both women and their children.

One of the primary advantages of "patriarchal" social structure is that it motivates men to work harder, and makes womens live easier.

So yeah, if you want to live in a society where men play video games, drink beer and only work part time, while women work 70 hours a week, from dawn till dusk with a baby strapped to their back, just so they can afford to live in some grimy hovel in the ghetto.... Go for it.. we're on the way there already...

Women need men a lot more than men need women... You mad? :)

No, it goes both ways. For instance I could say "If a women needs certain things that only a man could provide her, Then women should therefore devote their entire being towards finding a man to please and serve so that they are provided for."

Of course women would still have children, but those children would often than not have the mother's last name.

I like this idea. I actually support men having financial abortion rights because let's be honest, most of you would want nothing to do with your own children.

Firstly, even if there were no more formal marriages (or de facto, or anything equivalent), and even if men and women stopped living together in long-term units (a rather implausible idea), families wouldn't actually disappear.

Biological fathers would generally still want to be emotional fathers too (after all, those who would opt out are likely to be those who have little or no personal interaction with their children now), and at the same time mothers would generally want the father to be around.

Eventually people would only know their maternal lineage.

Even if people only recorded the matrilineal descent in surnames, that wouldn't affect people's knowledge of their purported paternal ancestry, any more than only using the father's surname obscures knowledge of the mother's lineage.

For questions of inheritance you'd essentially be requiring men to specify a will (but they should do that anyway, as the death taxes tend to be higher if one is intestate), but nothing else would change, except for the nobility. They would presumably have to adopt someone (possibly as an adult, as is possible in Common Law (and, for that matter, in Justinian Law) as son and heir.

Women will always have the upper hand because biologically we give birth. We are the gatekeepers of life. We don't have to invent anything or get into dangerous professions because that's your job. You're basically here to serve your Gods... Women.
