The responses to his original comment were not hateful. At this point, I am showing four responses to his original comment. None of them contain insults directed at him. None of them are hateful in nature. phlake's response simply calls out his sexism (he was being sexist) and informs him that mothers are more likely than fathers to abuse their children.
The user's responses when informed that he was incorrect about fathers being abusers is more telling. Follow phlake's comment thread with him and you will see that after being informed and given a link to government data proving that mothers are more likely than fathers to abuse their children, the user doesn't admit that he was wrong. He grudgingly admits that the data shows mothers being more likely to abuse, but basically acts like it doesn't matter because what he sees in his head (male abusers) is just as important.
TLDR, he wasn't treated hatefully. He was called out on his sexism and given data to correct his biases. Then when given said data, he continued to justify his biases.
