the Red Cross doesn't turn down blood for no reason. 2% of the US population makes up at least 42% of all AIDS/HIV cases, and 53% of all new AIDS/HIV cases. Gay men is the only demographic in which AIDS/HIV continues to show a positive growth rate every year.

The CDC in NOT homophobic, its just that despite what you learned watching Will and Grace, many gay men are promiscuous and very often use drugs, and have absurdly high instances of sexually transmitted diseases, despite public awareness campaigns that have helped even the hardest to reach of at risk groups.

The letter is based on the assumption that all testing is 100% accurate. Its not. 99.9999% is not 100%, not when you're dealing with a disease like AIDS.

Secondly, gay men are a relatively small group of potential blood donors, excluding them does not significantly affect the total volume of blood that could be obtained.

Accepting donations from gay men poses a plausible risk, with very little benefit. This is a medical decision, not a matter of bigotry.

For comparison, I personally am also banned from giving blood. As a result of the Mad Cow disease outbreak, anyone who had eaten beef products in Britain, in the 80's was banned from giving blood, as they may be potential carriers for Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD).

I used to be a regular blood donor, and felt a certain sense of "warm fuzzies" knowing I was doing something to help others.

But now I'm banned from giving blood, because I'm British. Is that racist?

..If I know for sure that I don't have HIV or anything like that and my blood gets tested anyway, then these bitches have no business prying into my personal life.
