Do you think there is a difference between domestic violence by a man who hits someone he knows is weaker, and a hit by a woman to a man for attention, which is what you said you wanted? In both cases, is the woman still weaker...maybe her demand for attention is a sign she has less power in the relationship. Sure, she was coddled by the cops. But I don't think she's in denial - I'm actually very grateful to have somebody finally articulate the difference I'm constantly trying to explain between a chrinically battered/terrorized spouse and a couple who've engaged in situational violence (mutual or one-sided). Both situations are bad, but the former requires drastic outsideintervention, and the latter is often fixable if the offending party gets their shit together. How we, as friends and family, react to domestic violence really depends on what kind of violence is going down. It's a continuum, not an on/off switch.

What would have happened to a man doing the same?

Police would have been very understanding for the absurdity of an arrest for verbal abuse.

And of course, there is a difference: whatever women do is excusable.
