I don't care to find out who is right or wrong in this particular situation, but it upsets me greatly that scientists are criticized and slandered when their experiments produce socially unacceptable results, and that there is a lack of funding for studies that go against the "everyone, everywhere is equal" bullshit.

I'd have to log into LiveJournal to read this link, apparently, but I can only assume it's about Satoshi Kanazawa.

If so, then I recommend that anyone getting all upset about this read the article he published, with the help of a smart friend if you're not familiar with the scientific method. Satoshi Kanazawa's work is not science, by any meaning of the term, and his column in Psychology Today is not a personal blog. The article in question was offensive not only because of its cultural ramifications, but because it is entirely spurious; it would have been impossible for a man with his training to accidentally make the kinds of grossly incompetent errors which define the entire piece. The fact that his findings are intentional insulting towards a particular cultural group becomes highly relevant when you consider that it's not the result of science.

So, if you just want to rage about feminists and women being emotional instead of logical, by all means enjoy yourself. But this is a case of a trained scientist publishing a highly inflammatory racist opinion piece, for no apparent reason other than to raise controversy, and defending his opinions with the misapplication of scientific analysis to a largely irrelevant dataset.

I would like to see Kanazawa fired from everything, not because my feelings are hurt by his article, but because he cheapens science-- and specifically the field of evolutionary psychology-- by consistently misusing his position as an Official Scientist™ to publish increasingly incoherent, increasingly indefensible personal prejudices in a format that lay readers will understandably believe to be the result of the scientific method. He'd probably fly under the radar if his findings weren't controversial, but he'd be no less of a fraud. And he doesn't want to fly under the radar; he wants controversy and popular acclaim.

According to the Guardian, many LSE students lodged complaints after Kanazawa's offensive post made the rounds. Said Sherelle Davids of the LSE students' union, "Kanazawa deliberately manipulates findings that justify racist ideology. As a black woman I feel his conclusions are a direct attack on black women everywhere who are not included in social ideas of beauty." And Amena Amer, the union's incoming education officer, said,

We support free speech and academic freedom, but Kanazawa's research fuels hate against ethnic and religious minorities promoted by neo-Nazi groups. Not only does he use the LSE's credentials to legitimise his 'research' but this jeopardises the academic credibility of the LSE.

feel feel feel....I FEEL bad that she got her fee fees hurt but c'mon. Here I thought women weren't supposed to be ruled by their emotions.

I think his science is shoddy but there is a lot of data to back up his conclusions to some degree. Just the other day I posted a article about a black woman feeling resentment over a black man marrying a white woman. I think one comment talked about how black women are on the bottom of the beauty hierarchy and are even under asian men as far as desirability as mates go. That says a lot considering that I think asian men get shit on worse than gay men in that asian men are seen as less masculine by women.

Either way, this happened on his blog and outside of the university and this wasn't even a academic paper but a freakin blog post on a blog that isn't affiliated with the university and these women want him fired but claim to be upholding free speech....

Guys, this is bullshit. did you read his article? It was full of crap with unsubstantiated conclusions.

If we could say that he had the evidence to buttress his point then we might have a discussion but you can't tell me that there is a truly scientific way to determine that Black women are less attractive than all other races.

His ass needs to be punished for posting that crap.

I read his article. It was a load of unscientific crap. I would have thought it was okay had it not been full of subjective stuff that didn't even make sense (my paraphrased personal favorite: "from an objective standpoint, men are much less attractive than women"). He interviewed a small number of people and then made graphs like it was conclusive evidence. He never specified where his sample came from, and I think if it was from, say, Africa, or somewhere he might have gotten wildly different results.
